Alexandre Song |
Cameroon international midfielder Alex Song was attacked by bitter football fans along a commercial avenue in Yaounde on Tuesday while returning from a training session.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants, most of whom were young boys, accused the 24-year-old Arsenal midfielder of being responsible for Cameroon’s 2-1 loss to Libya in Sfax, Tunisia last Sunday in the second matchday of 2014 World Cup qualifying.
The police say an investigation has been launched and that the aggressors will be brought to justice.
Roger Milla’s Citizens Committee for the Revamping of Cameroonian Football has condemned the attack, which it termed awful and barbaric. The association also called on the government to act immediately and arrest all those involved in order to dissuade other troublemakers.
Cameroon were toppled from the summit of Group I after losing their second game to Libya and are now placed third with three points behind Libya on four points and DR Congo on three with a superior goal difference.
The Indomitable Lions are currently in Yaounde preparing for their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash against Guinea Bissau, set for Saturday.
