Apple has responded to complaints from owners of the iPhone 5 about a purple glare on their camera lens by saying that they need to hold the handset differently.
Some users of the the new iPhone 5 have reported seeing a purplish or other coloured flare, haze, or spot from an out-of-scene light source when they take pictures or capture videos.
The flaw appears to occur when the iPhone 5's iSight camera is aimed towards a very bright light, such as the sun or an incandescent light.
After moving the phone away from the light source, a purple "halo" is left on the camera lens and this effect appears on any pictures taken.
Some users suggested that the problem was down to the sapphire crystal lens cover introduced with the new Apple smartphone.
Whilst there have been enough complaints to warrant an official response from Apple, the US firm has claimed that the issue is not down to its technology.
Apple says that the purple glare has appeared on all previous generations of the iPhone, and can be addressed by changing position or "shielding the lens with your hand".
"Most small cameras, including those in every generation of iPhone, may exhibit some form of flare at the edge of the frame when capturing an image with out-of-scene light sources," the company wrote on its website.
"This can happen when a light source is positioned at an angle (usually just outside the field of view) so that it causes a reflection off the surfaces inside the camera module and onto the camera sensor.
"Moving the camera slightly to change the position at which the bright light is entering the lens, or shielding the lens with your hand, should minimise or eliminate the effect."
