Muddle East: Mourning Month Of Muharram Begins In Iran

Iranian mourners

Worshippers pay their respects to one of their saints yesterday — by covering themselves in mud.
Mourners chanted and beat their heads as they coated themselves from head to toe in the thick wet dirt in Bijar, Iran.
Millions of Muslims across the world were marking the Day of Ashura, which commemorates the death of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson Imam Hussein.
Shia Muslims hold him up as one of the most beloved saints in their religion. He died in battle in the 7th Century.
