President Goodluck Jonathan will depart Abuja tomorrow on a two-nation trip to Trinidad and Tobago, celebrating its Emancipation Day; and Jamaica, for its Independence Anniversary.
Mr. Jonathan, who is expected back in Abuja on August 4, will be accompanied by the First Lady/Bayelsa State Permanent Secretary (BSPS), Patience Jonathan. On Wednesday, they will participate in activities marking the Trinidad and Tobago Emancipation Day.
Mr. Jonathan will arrive in Jamaica on August 2, and participate in a Special Commemorative Session of Parliament in his honour, after which he will be hosted by the Jamaican Prime Minister, Portia Simpson-Miller, among other activities.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Emancipation Day is celebrated to mark the end of slavery for Africans in the British Caribbean on August 1, 1838, and has been observed as a national holiday in Trinidad and Tobago since 1985. Jamaica attained independence from Great Britain in 1962.
