Internal Affairs is now investigating the incident and has notified the Secret Service.
The police officer in question reportedly made the threatening comments on Wednesday as several officers from the Special Operations Division discussed potential threats against President Barack Obama and his family.
During this discussion, the as-yet unidentified officer allegedly said he would shoot the First Lady and then used his cellphone to show a photo of the firearm he said he’d use.
Another officer overheard the threat and reported it to a lieutenant at the Division, who in turn notified superiors.
“We received an allegation that inappropriate comments were made. We are currently investigating the nature of those comments,” said police spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump.
Police officials immediately reassigned the police officer in question to administrative duties.
Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier said, “There is conflicting information about what the officer said. … Internal Affairs will get to the bottom of it.”
This guy definitely doesn’t sound like the sharpest tool in the shed. Let’s hope it was just an idle threat.
