British actor Idris Elba stars as Nelson Mandela in the first full length trailer for the biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
Idris, 40, is tipped to win an Oscar for his portrayal of the anti-apartheid hero.
The film is based on Mandela’s own 1994 autobiography and follows his life from childhood to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.
The new trailer begins with explosive shots of Mandela’s violent opposition to the apartheid state.
The freedom fighter is then seen giving a rousing speech to a crowd of supporters.
We also get a peek of the love story between Nelson and his second wife Winnie Mandela - played by fellow Brit and Bond girl Naomie Harris - as they share a romantic kiss.
Mandela’s passionate court battle and following incarceration at Robben Island is also teased.
Idris – famous for his role in The Wire – said it meant a great deal to be given the chance to play Mandela.
The star admitted: “It’s a massive opportunity to be part of a true legend’s life and, more importantly, for the film to re-educate people on this legend.”
Nelson Mandela celebrated his 95th birthday yesterday in hospital having been admitted with a lung infection last month – with doctors saying his health is ‘improving’.
