Madonna Crushes Concert Competition In 2012 With $296 Million

The music industry has minted some new arena and stadium stars lately, but one look at the top-grossing tours of 2012 and you might think we're in a time warp.
Though her album sales are not on par with her 1980s heyday, Madonna can clearly still put glittery butts in seats. According to Pollstar, she easily topped the list of the year's highest-grossing tours with $296.1 million, besting another Reagan-era rival, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, whose tour raked in $210.2 million. Former Pink Floyd leader Roger Waters had a very good year as well, pulling in $186.4 million on a list of the top 50 worldwide tours whose combined gross was $3 billion.
Both Madonna and Springsteen sole more than 2.1 million tickets each, averaging more than 31,000 fans per night. But, of course, Madonna also managed to make headlines on an almost nightly basis thanks to the usual flesh-baring and cage-rattling antics, which ranged from her musical tweaking of Lady Gaga, to the waving of fake firearms, flashing of naughty bits and a feud with French right-wing national Front party leader Marine Le Pen.
There were some newer names on the list as well, including Coldplay at #4 ($171.3 million), Lady Gaga (#5, $161.4 million) and the Cirque du Soleil "Michael Jackson: The Immortal" tour (#6, $140.2 million).
Among the other notable names: Metallica (#8, $86.1 million), Red Hot Chili Peppers (#10, $57.8 million), Jennifer Lopez (#13, $52.6 million), Drake (#19, $43.4 million), Radiohead (#21, $42.5 million), Justin Bieber (#23, $40.2 million) and the Black Keys (#27, $38.1 million).

Matthew McConaughey Reveals Son's Name

Matthew McConaughey has revealed his new baby boy is called Livingston Alves McConaughey.
The actor's model wife Camila Alves, 30 - who tied the knot with the Magic Mike star in June - gave birth to the couple's third child on Friday, in Austin, Texas.
Writing on his Whosay page on Saturday, the 43-year-old star said: "Camila gave birth to our third child yesterday morning. Our son, Livingston Alves McConaughey, was born at 7:43 a.m. on 12.28.12.
"He greeted the world at 9 lbs., and 21 inches. Bless up and thank you for your well wishes."
Matthew and Camila also have two other children Levi, four, and three-year-old Vida.
Camila previously admitted she was worried her baby bump could ruin her career because she signed on as the face of department store Macy's I.N.C International Concepts' campaign in April, and discovered shortly afterwards that she was pregnant with her third child.
She said: "A week before we were supposed to have a photo shoot, I found out I was pregnant!
"I was over the moon, but my first reaction was that it was going to be a deal-breaker for the campaign - that they wouldn't want a pregnant mum - but we worked it out.
"I was trying to push [having another baby] back as much as I could, but it was time. This baby was ready to come.
"The main thing to me is to make sure our home is peaceful, that it's healthy and that the kids are good."

Kim Kardashian 12 Weeks Pregnant

Kim Kardashian is 12 weeks pregnant.
The reality TV star's boyfriend Kanye West shared the couple's happy news during a performance at Revel in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Sunday, and the brunette beauty's representative has now confirmed the news.
During the show, Kanye - who has been dating Kim since April 2011 - told the audience to "stop the music and make noise for my baby mama."
While Kim - who is believed to be around 12 weeks pregnant - hasn't spoken about her pregnancy, her family are delighted by the news.
Sister Kourtney Kardashian - who has two children, three-year-old Mason and five-month-old Penelope, with partner Scott Disick - tweeted: "Been wanting to shout from the rooftops with joy and now I can! Another angel to welcome to our family. Overwhelmed with excitement! (sic)"
Sibling Khloe Kardashian added: "Keeping secrets is hard with so many family members! Especially when you are so freaking excited!!!!! LOVE is everything!!!! (sic)".
And Kim's mother and manager Kris Jenner is delighted.
She tweeted: "Im a happy girl !!!!!!!!! Wowza! (sic)"
Kim, 32, and 35-year-old Kanye spent the festive period together and were seen with the 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' star's family watching her brother-in-law Lamar Odom playing basketball for the Los Angeles Clippers on Christmas Day.
However, they left at half time with Kim later tweeting she felt "unwell".
She added: "In bed with the flu all day. Praying this goes away fast!"

The Game's baggage handlers and weed carriers have no reason to ever be late. The Compton rapper dropped about $100K to buy Rolex watches for 12 of his buddies.
According to TMZ, Game paid $8,300 for each watch, bestowed on the chosen friend as a Christmas gift and as a token of his appreciation for holding him down. The timepieces have additional meaning since the "Hate It Or Love It" rapper has started calling his crew The Roley Boyz.

The Game and former Aftermath Records rapper Stat Quo recently started a record label together called Rolex Records (which now appears to be called Roley Records). "He was signed to Aftermath with me in the beginning," Game told Billboard of linking with Stat on the biz side. "Now we're business partners, which is cool because he was a good friend of mine and he's just as equally music smart so we'll see how it goes."
The Game recently released his fifth album, Jesus Piece. Although the record sold 86,000 units its first week and debuted in the top 10, it was the first of his albums not to land at either No. 1 or No. 2 its first week out.

Skyfall’s Nine-Figure Takings Break UK Box Office Record

Skyfall

James Bond hit Skyfall has become the first movie ever to take a nine-figure sum at the UK box office.
The film, which already holds the record for the biggest UK box office haul of all time, has now passed the £100million mark in the year the 007 movies celebrated their 50th anniversary.
Daniel Craig’s third appearance as Bond is still on general release more than two months after it first hit cinemas.
Globally it has taken more than ONE BILLION DOLLARS, which amounts to in excess of £620million.
Skyfall, which was directed by Sam Mendes, became the highest grossing film ever in the UK earlier this month when it overtook the £94million generated by Avatar.
The Bond film achieved the figure in just 40 days, while James Cameron’s Avatar took 11 months to amass its total.
The 23rd 007 adventure sees suave Bond battling with villain Raoul Silva (played by Javier Bardem), who aims to take revenge on his former boss M (Dame Judi Dench).

Michael Jackson Gets £15k Rug Refund From Beyond The Grave

Michael Jackson 02 Arena

Staff at a posh shop were floored when they were asked for a refund — on a rug Michael Jackson bought three years ago.
Members of the Beat It star’s entourage turned up at the West London store with the £15,000 carpet still neatly rolled and unused.
They said Jacko had personally picked out the lavish 12ft by 9ft silk and wool floor covering after spotting it on the shop website in 2009 and aides had come in to pay for it.
The singer had intended to place it in his dressing room at the O2 Arena for his final concert dates — but died before he ever had a chance to use it.
Staff at The Rug Company in exclusive Holland Park were amazed when aides returned with it asking if they could have their money back.
A Rug Company insider said: “Michael personally chose the rug so it would complement his concert dressing room. But the tour was scrapped.”
Amazingly, despite the long time gap staff DID give back the money.
The insider added: “The rug was sold with a lifetime guarantee and as it was unused and in immaculate condition we paid a full refund.”
The firm, which also supplies Madonna with rugs for her tours, has since put Jacko’s back on sale.

Denzel Washington Celebrates 58th Birthday On St. Barts

washington
Denzel Washington has joined the celebrities holidaying in St. Barts after jetting off to the Caribbean with his wife Pauletta to celebrate his 58th birthday.
The Flight star was spotted on the beach on Dec. 28 with his wife of 29 years.
The Washingtons later boarded a yacht for an afternoon at sea and they also hit an island restaurant to celebrate in style.
It's not known if the couple will be among the guests attending Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's New Year's Eve party on St. Barts.
The Caribbean paradise has become a star-studded hotspot this winter - Kate Moss, Russell Simmons, model Stephanie Seymour and Sean 'Diddy' Combs have all been spotted there in recent days and Naomi Campbell and movie mogul Harvey Weinstein are expected to fly in for the big New Year's Eve bash on Monday. Kings of Leon will reportedly headline the party.

Charlie Sheen Sorry For Homophobic Slur

sheen

Charlie Sheen has apologised for making a homophobic slur.
The Anger Management star was filmed hurling a derogatory comment at the crowd at the opening of his new bar in the plush El Ganzo hotel in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on Friday night.
According to gossip website TMZ.com, the 48-year-old actor was caught on camera yelling: "How we doing?... Lying bunch of f**got a**holes, how we doing?" while introducing a number of musical acts on stage to perform at the bash, including rocker Slash.
Charlie, who is a partner in the bar, has since apologised for the comment, saying: "I meant no ill will and intended to hurt no one and I apologise if I offended anyone."
He also attempted to jokingly brush off the insult, by insisting: "I meant to say maggot but I have a lisp."
Before taking to the stage, Charlie was said to have been partying hard at the event and was spotted kissing a number of girls, shaking hands with guests and taking pictures of everyone.
Guests at the bash included Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Dr Robert Huizega from The Biggest Loser.

Obama Wants Gun Violence Measures Passed In 2013

Recalling the shooting of 20 first graders as the worst day of his presidency, President Barack Obama on Sunday pledged to put his "full weight" behind a legislative package next year aimed at containing gun violence.
In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," Obama voiced skepticism about proposals to place armed guards at schools in the aftermath of the Dec. 14 deadly assault at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
In his boldest terms yet, he vowed to rally the American people around an agenda to limit gun violence and said he still supports increased background checks and bans on assault weapons and high capacity bullet magazines.
"It is not enough for us to say, 'This is too hard so we're not going to try,"' Obama said. "So what I intend to do is I will call all the stakeholders together. I will meet with Republicans. I will meet with Democrats. I will talk to anybody.
"I think there are a vast majority of responsible gun owners out there who recognize that we can't have a situation in which somebody with severe psychological problems is able to get the kind of high capacity weapons that this individual in Newtown obtained and gun down our kids. And, yes, it's going to be hard."
Obama's comments come as the schoolroom shooting has elevated the issue of gun violence to the forefront of public attention.
Six adults also died at the school. Authorities say the shooter killed himself and his mother at their home.
The slayings have prompted renewed calls for greater gun controls. The National Rifle Association has resisted those efforts vociferously, arguing instead that schools should have armed guards for protection.
"I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools," Obama said. "And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem."
Obama said he intended to press the issue with the public.
"Will there be resistance? Absolutely there will be resistance," he said.
"The question then becomes whether we are actually shook up enough by what happened here that it does not just become another one of these routine episodes where it gets a lot of attention for a couple of weeks and then it drifts away. It certainly won't feel like that to me. This is something that - you know, that was the worst day of my presidency. And it's not something that I want to see repeated."
Besides getting gun violence legislation passed next year, Obama also listed immigration as a top priority for 2013 as well as deficit reduction. A big deficit reduction deal with Republicans proved elusive this month and Obama is now hoping Senate Democratic and Republican leaders salvage a scaled back plan that avoids across the board tax increases for virtually all Americans.
He issued a defense of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who has been mentioned as one of the leading candidates for new secretary of defense.
Hagel, who opposed President George W. Bush's decision to go to war with Iraq, has been criticized in conservative circles for not being a strong enough ally of Israel. Many liberals and gay activists also have banded against him for comments he made in 1998 about an openly gay nominee for an ambassadorship
Obama, who briefly served with Hagel in the Senate, stressed that he had yet to make a decision on a secretary of defense but said called Hagel a "patriot."
"He is somebody who has done extraordinary work both in the United States Senate," he said. "Somebody who served this country with valor in Vietnam. And is somebody who's currently serving on my intelligence advisory board and doing an outstanding job."
He noted that Hagel had apologized for his 14-year-old remark. "And I think it's a testimony to what has been a positive change over the last decade in terms of people's attitudes about gays and lesbians serving our country," Obama said.

Woman Hurt In Acid Attack In Germany

German police have arrested two suspects after a young woman of Turkish origin suffered serious burns in an acid attack in western Germany.
The 20-year-old victim opened the door of her home in the town of Hilden early on Saturday when one of the suspects doused her with sulphuric acid from a tin can.
The victim immediately felt strong burns in her face and called rescue services who identified the liquid as an acid.
The woman was taken to a hospital. Her grandmother was also slightly hurt in the attack.
One of the suspects, a 22-year-old man of Turkish origin, was arrested and remanded in custody on Saturday.
He told investigators he had asked an acquaintance to carry out the attack, police and the public prosecutor's office in the state capital of Duesseldorf said in a joint statement.
The other suspect, who is aged 18 and thought to have carried out the attack, turned himself in to the police on Sunday.
"The attack was committed with sulphuric acid which the assailants bought in a pharmacy," authorities said on Sunday.
The victim had reported the suspected attacker three times to the police for threatening her and using physical violence.
Authorities said the young man had been ordered to stay away from her.

China Adds Destroyers To Marine Surveillance Fleet

China has transferred two destroyers and nine other ex-navy vessels to its maritime surveillance fleet, reports said Monday, as it moves to beef up its position in bitter territorial rows with Japan and other neighbours.
Beijing renovated the ships and transferred them to surveillance operations to “alleviate the insufficiency of vessels used to protect maritime interests”, said a report on Tencent, one of China’s major news portals.
China is embroiled in a maritime dispute with Japan that has seen tensions between the two Asian giants, the world’s second- and third-largest economies, at times reach fever pitch.
It is also engaged in a simmering row with its southern neighbours over its claim to vast swathes of the South China Sea.
Beijing has been sending maritime patrol vessels into waters around the East China Sea islands — which it claims as the Diaoyu and which Japan controls and calls the Senkaku — since Tokyo nationalised the chain in September.
China is apparently seeking to prove it can come and go in the area at will and on Monday three of Beijing’s ships were spotted in the waters around the islands, according to Japan’s coastguard, in the latest perceived incursion.
Two of Beijing’s newly-refurbished vessels are destroyers, with one each to operate in the East and South China Seas, with the others including tugs, icebreakers and survey ships, according to the Tencent report.
The destroyers, the Nanjing and Nanning, numbered 131 and 162 respectively, each had a displacement of 3,250 tonnes and had a top speed of 32 knots, according to sinodefence.com, an independent UK-based website.
It said that during their time in the navy they were equipped with 130mm guns with a range of 29 kilometres, anti-ship missiles and other weapons.
The Nanjing went into service in 1977 and the Nanning in 1979. Both retired this year from the Chinese navy, previous domestic media reports said.
It was not clear whether it was the first time the maritime surveillance fleet has acquired destroyers, or when the transfers took place.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined to comment when asked about the destroyers at its regular briefing on Monday.
Officials at the Ministry of Defence and headquarters of the China Marine Surveillance were not immediately available to comment when contacted by AFP.
The transfer report was first published in the International Herald Leader, a Chinese-language newspaper linked to Beijing’s official news agency Xinhua, and the author said the operation had been given significantly more capacity.
“The maritime surveillance team’s power has been greatly strengthened and its capacity to execute missions sharply improved, providing a fundamental guarantee for completing the currently arduous task to protect maritime interests,” wrote Yu Zhirong, of the government’s Research Centre for Chinese Marine Development.
Since 2000 the maritime surveillance fleet, which is tasked with “protecting China’s interests and executing law enforcement missions”, has also received a total of 13 new vessels, the report said.
Daily patrols have been stepped up from six vessels before the disputes heated up to “more than 10″ Yu said, adding authorities planned to build another 36 surveillance ships by 2015.
A Chinese plane overflew the islands in the East China Sea earlier this month, in what Japan said was the first time Beijing had breached its airspace since at least 1958. Tokyo scrambled fighter jets in response.
Yu added in the report: “I believe Chinese maritime surveillance authorities will build and buy many ships and planes in the future with strong capabilities and advanced equipment.”

Ahmadinejad Slams Pressure To Impose Islamic Values

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has again spoken out against the use of pressure to impose Islamic values on people, especially university candidates, media reported on Monday.
“You cannot impose things by issuing decrees and directives — a choice imposed by force has no value whatsoever,” Ahmadinejad said in a speech on Sunday.
“In some universities, female students are forced to wear the chador (covering the whole body, leaving only the face exposed), but the way they are forced to wear it… it is better not worn since it becomes worthless,” he said.
He also criticised criteria on the selection of university candidates, citing the case of a student denied university admittance in the 1980s because he had shaved. Being unshaven in Iran is a sign that you are a good Muslim.
Ahmadinejad also mentioned another case of a girl refused a university place because she had “talked to a boy in the street and had her headscarf back an inch,” thereby showing her hair.
He said that after he intervened in both cases they were granted places.
Ahmadinejad also denounced some of the questions posed to candidates during interviews for government jobs.
“We have asked people if they drank alcohol or have illicit sexual relations. This is an insult and goes against religion,” he said.
Ahmadinejad, whose second and final presidential term ends in 2013, has repeatedly drawn the ire of ultra-conservative religious figures in the Islamic republic by advocating a more liberal view of Islam, criticising in particular the use of force to compel women to cover their hair.

Switzerland Freezes $300 Mn Of Mubarak Sons’ Assets

Swiss authorities have frozen 300 million dollars (227 million euros) sitting in Credit Suisse accounts in Geneva held by the sons of deposed Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, the newspaper Le Matin Dimanche reported on Sunday.
The funds are held in accounts belonging to Alaa and Gamal Mubarak, sons of the ex-president who are currently being held in an Egyptian prison.
The brothers are accused of using their position as scions of Egypt’s long-time ruler to help themselves to villas, luxury cars and stakes in the country’s key companies.
According to the newspaper, the funds were deposited at the Credit Suisse in 2005, which was after Switzerland tightened rules governing transactions by politically exposed depositors.
A Credit Suisse spokesman refused comment, citing the bank’s secrecy policy.
The paper said Egypt-linked funds had also been frozen at the Swiss office of French banking giant BNP Paribas.
Switzerland has opened a probe targeting 14 people close to the Mubarak regime who are suspected of embezzling public funds and widescale corruption.
Earlier this month, Swiss authorities refused to provide their Egyptian counterparts with access to their findings so far, citing concerns for the “institutional situation” in Cairo.

First Gay Anglican Bishop Set To Retire

New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson says he chafed for several years at being branded the first openly gay bishop of the Anglican Church until he realised he was wasting a pulpit from which he could advocate for equality.
"I'd been given this really remarkable opportunity and it would be selfish of me not to be the best steward of that opportunity," he recently told The Associated Press in an interview as he prepares to retire in January.
"We went from my consecration, which set off this international controversy, to nine years later seeing gay, lesbian and transgender congregants welcome at all levels of the church, including bishop."
Robinson's election in 2003 as the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican Church created an international uproar and led conservative Episcopalians to break away from the main church in the United States.
Robinson, 65, will hand the pastoral staff to his successor, A Robert Hirschfeld, in a ceremony at St Paul's Episcopal Church in Concord on January 5.

Mario Balotelli Is Glad That I'm Dating His Sister- Martins

It is no longer news that Nigeria’s weapon of mass destruction, Obafemi Martins, is dating Abigail Barwuah, Mario Balotelli’s elder sister – what is news however is the speculation that the Manchester City ‘bad boy’ is unhappy about the pair dating.
However, Martins, who once played with Balotelli at Inter’s youth team in Milan, Italy, has dismissed such insinuations with a wave of the hand.
“Mario is my boy”, he started. “The respect is there because I used to play at Inter, in the youth team with him. He’s giving me my respect and I’m doing same. People are putting it in the news that he’s upset, of course he’s glad.
“He’s glad that Obafemi Martins is dating his sister. But if he gets jealous then it means he doesn’t want his sister to grow. But it’s not like that. The boy is not a bad boy” Martins insisted.
He also disclosed that for now, marriage is not on the cards as he and Abigail haven’t discussed it.
“The relationship is true but getting married or not, we haven’t discussed anything like that. She’s upstairs and we’re happy together” he concluded.
Meanwhile, the love between the pair is rather coming as a surprise to close watchers as Abigail, 24, had earlier in the year, granted an interview to a tabloid, The Sun, where she claimed that she couldn’t date a footballer and even claims her brother wouldn’t allow it: “Mario wouldn’t let me anyway. He knows only too well what they are like. They are surrounded by women. Girls throw themselves at them.”

Africa’s Musical Show, Kora Awards Now Billed For Sunday

The Kora Awards, dubbed “Africa’s Grammys”, will now take place Sunday in Abidjan, organisers said, after confusion about when the event would happen and when its star — US rapper Chris Brown — would arrive in Ivory Coast.
“Everything will take place Sunday,” Kora spokesman Ernest Adjovi said late Saturday.
The award extravaganza, which originated in South Africa in 1994, was originally to have been held Saturday in Ivory Coast’s economic capital.
At the last minute, organisers claimed Brown had missed his flight and the show would be delayed until Monday.
But a source close to the ceremony said Brown “is not the real reason” the event was delayed, and blamed the postponement on organisational issues.
Past ceremonies have been attended by South African anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela and the late “King of Pop” Michael Jackson.
Brown is known as much for his virtuoso dance steps as for his tumultuous relationship with singer Rihanna, whom he has admitted assaulting.
He will arrive early Sunday on a private jet and, ahead of the award show, will perform at concert “for peace in Africa” at Abidjan’s main sport stadium on Sunday, Adjovi said.
African artists including the Nigerian duo P-Square, winner of the last top Kora prize in Ouagadougou in 2010, will also take part.
For Ivory Coast, which is still recovering from four months of post-election violence that ended in April 2011 after claiming some 3,000 lives, the event signals a return to normalcy.
However, it has drawn criticism over the price of admission: one million CFA francs (1,500 euros, $2,000) for those who want a seat in the luxury hotel for the ceremony, or 50,000 CFA francs (75 euros, $100) for seats outside.
These prices are far out of reach for most people in the poor west African country, the world’s top cocoa producer.

Pakistani Taliban Execute 21 Kidnapped Paramilitary Men

Officials said the bodies of the 21 paramilitary force men had been discovered in the wilderness not far from the camps. (Reuters)

Pakistani Taliban militants have executed 21 paramilitary force men who were captured in attacks on their posts late last week, a government official said on Sunday.
Officials said the bodies of the 21 men had been discovered in the wilderness not far from the camps, their hands tied before they were shot. Two others -- one wounded and one unhurt -- were also found.
Around 200 militants, armed with heavy weapons including mortars and rocket launchers, stormed the government paramilitary camps before dawn on Thursday, killing two security personnel and kidnapping 23.
The men, who were from a paramilitary force recruited from members of ethnic Pashtun tribes in northwestern Pakistan, were kidnapped in attacks on three checkpoints near the city of Peshawar.
They were tied up, blindfolded and lined up before being shot one-by-one, said Naveed Anwar, a senior administration official in the Khyber region told AFP news agency.
The killing of the men followed two high-profile attacks in Peshawar this month. Suicide bombers attacked Peshawar's airport on Dec. 15 and a bomb killed a senior Pashtun nationalist politician and eight other people at a rally on Dec. 22.
The violence underscores the Taliban's ability to carry out high-profile attacks in major cities even as the amount of territory they control has shrunk over the past three years.
The camps are outside Peshawar, the main city of northwest Pakistan, close to the restive tribal areas that border Afghanistan, which are regarded as havens for Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked militants.
"We found 21 bullet riddled bodies of security personnel a short while ago in an uninhabited area," local government official Naveed Akbar told AFP.
"One was found alive but wounded and admitted to hospital while another managed to escape unhurt."
Gul Shehzad, another government official, said authorities received information just before midnight that some bodies were lying in the wilderness, within about four kilometers of the camps.
"The hands of soldiers were tied with rope before they were shot," Shehzad told AFP.
He said Taliban militants had accepted the responsibility for the kidnappings.
In August, the Pakistani Taliban released a video showing what appeared to be the severed heads of a dozen soldiers, after the military said 15 troops had gone missing following fighting with militants in the Bajaur tribal district.
There has been a surge in attacks in northwest Pakistan in the past two weeks, including a suicide bombing on a political meeting in Peshawar on Saturday that killed Bashir Bilour, the second top politician in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for that attack, saying Bilour, an outspoken critic of the militants, was assassinated in revenge for the death of one of the movement's "elders."
Pakistan has lost more than 3,000 soldiers in the fight against homegrown insurgents but has resisted U.S. pressure to do more to eliminate havens used by those fighting the Americans in Afghanistan.
Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud said his organization could be open to talks with Islamabad in a video released Friday, but poured scorn on the idea his men would give up their guns.
Mehsud, who has a $5 million U.S. government bounty on his head, said the militant group would consider negotiations with the Pakistani government but only if it abandoned ties with Washington.

French Paper To Publish Comic Book Life Of Prophet Muhammad

A French weekly known for publishing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed to the ire of conservative Muslims said Sunday it plans to release a comic book biography of Islam’s founder that will be researched and educational.
Satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo has on several occasions depicted Islam’s prophet in an effort to defend free speech and defy the anger of Muslims who believe depicting Mohammed is sacrilegious.
“It is a biography authorized by Islam since it was edited by Muslims,” said Charlie Hebdo’s publisher and the comic’s illustrator, who goes by the name Charb.
“I don’t think higher Muslim minds could find anything inappropriate,” Charb said.
The biography will be published Wednesday and was put together by a Franco-Tunisian researcher known only as Zineb, Charb said.
The publisher said the idea for the comic book came to him in 2006 when a newspaper in Denmark published cartoons of Mohammed, later republished by Charlie Hebdo, drawing angry protests across the Muslim world.
“Before having a laugh about a character, it’s better to know him. As much as we know about the life of Jesus, we know nothing about Mohammed,” Charb said.
In September Charlie Hebdo published cartoons of a naked Mohammed as violent protests were taking place in several countries over a low-budget film made in the United States that insults the prophet.
In 2011 Charlie Hebdo’s offices were hit by a firebomb and its website pirated after publishing an edition titled “Charia Hebdo” featuring several Mohammed cartoons.
Charb, who has received death threats, lives under police protection.

Venezuela Deports French Man Over Alleged Chavez Plot

A French man jailed for an alleged plot to kill Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in 2009 was deported to France on Saturday, a Venezuelan official said.
Frederic Laurent Bouquet's expulsion was announced via a tweet by Iris Varela, the minister for the prison system.
"Frederic Laurent Bouquet was sentenced to four years (in Venezuelan jail), after confessing to plotting against Chavez. He had an arsenal in his possession" Varela tweeted.
According to Venezuelan state-run National Radio and the state-run Venezuelan TV station, Bouquet was arrested in 2009 with three men from the Dominican Republic. He had multiple guns as well as explosives and other military gear with him, according to reports.
"This arrest is a serious blow to terrorism and to those groups that seek to drag into Venezuela scenes of blood and confrontation," Tarek El Aissami, then-interior minister, told reporters at the time.
El Aissami at the time said Bouquet had military experience and had spent some time in Israel. He also said Bouquet was presumed to be a French intelligence agent.
In her tweet, Varela said Bouquet's deportation complies with a Venezuelan law that allows the government to expel anyone who jeopardizes the security and defense of the nation.

The statement added: "It was impossible for him (Rodgers) to be in close proximity with the players."

Jonathan, Cleric Feud Over Corruption At Azazi’s Burial

It was another rough outing for President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday as the issue of corruption under his administration featured prominently in a sermon delivered by a cleric at the funeral service for the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen. Andrew Azazi in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
In his homily, the Bishop of the Bomadi Catholic Vicarage, Rev. Hyancith Egbedo, was point blank when he attributed the bad condition of the East-West Road and the series of plane crashes in the country to corruption in the polity.
Rev. Egbebo said he was nearly killed on the bad East-West road. He told the gathering that there was need to tackle corrupt practices among political office holders and focus on the construction of roads.”
Gen. Azazi died on December 15, 2012 alongside Kaduna State Governor, Patrick Yakowa and four others in a helicopter crash in Bayelsa State. Azazi was a native of Bayelsa State
But President Jonathan disagreed with the cleric’s assertion that poor infrastructural development under his administration was due to the active involvement of elective office holders and political appointees in corrupt practices. The president insisted that what the nation needs was for Nigerians to change their attitude towards governance and development.
He said though corruption exists in the country, the citing of corruption as the reason for the failure in certain sectors of the economy including aviation and road sectors was wrong. “We talk about corruption as if it is the cause of our problems. No, yes, we have corruption in this country. The government has also been fighting corruption.”
Jonathan said from 2007 when he served as vice president and now as president, Nigeria has more agencies that fights corruption and has witnessed three heads of anti-corruption agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). “But we have discovered that most of the issues called corruption are not corruption. I remember the last meeting we had with the chief justice of the federation, this was when I tried to bring the heads of the three arms of government together to see how we will collectively suppress corruption.
And of course, we analysed the cases in court and discovered that about 80 per cent of them are not corruption cases.
Sometimes, the way we mention corruption makes it looks like when indigenes of some villages in the Niger Delta blame the death of a person on the activities of witches or spirits. If we do things properly and change our attitude as Nigerians, most of these issues that we blame on corruption will not come.”
The event was not all about corruption in the country as prominent Nigerians including the president paid glowing tributes to the late Azazi. Jonathan described him as a “good man and a decent military officer.”
Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi announced the state government’s  naming the newly constructed Lebobu Road opposite Elekaya Road in the Port Harcourt City as Owoye Azazi Street.
Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayesla State said Azazi was a true hero of the Ijaw nation and his departure had created a vacuum that cannot be filled in the Niger Delta.
“That is why, as a government, we did not hesitate to declare him as a true hero of Ijaw land and one who is deserving of a heroic burial as his remains are the first to be interred at the Heroes Park - an exclusive burial/final resting place for only true legends and heroes of the state.”
In her tribute and on behalf of the members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke, described the late Azazi as humility personified.

Indian Rape Victim Was Planning To Marry Man She Was Attacked With

The young Indian woman who died on Saturday from injuries she suffered in a gang-rape that has prompted national soul-searching was set to marry the man she was with when they were attacked, said friends and relatives.

The young Indian woman who died on Saturday from injuries she suffered in a gang-rape that has prompted national soul-searching was set to marry the man she was with when they were attacked, said friends and relatives.
They were speaking as she was cremated in Delhi after her body was received at the airport by the prime minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and Mrs Sonia Gandhi, the Congress Party president.
Her death in a Singapore Hospital in the early hours of yesterday [SAT] morning sparked protests and vigils in several major cities, amid an outpouring of anger and grief by millions across the country demanding greater protection for women from sexual violence.
The tragedy has forced India to confront the reality that sexually assaulted women are often blamed for the crime, forcing them to keep quiet and discouraging them from going to authorities for fear of exposing their families to ridicule. Police often refuse to accept complaints from rape victims, and the rare prosecutions that reach courts can drag on for years.
Security was tight, with no access to the public or media at the crematorium.
The victim, whose identity has been withheld to protect her family, was attacked with her fiancé after they boarded a bus in South Delhi’s upmarket Saket neighbourhood as they returned from a visit to the cinema. She was raped repeatedly by six men, who have now been charged with her murder, as the bus cruised the capital’s streets. Their brutal assaults were hidden from view by the bus’s tinted windows and closed curtains.
The 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist was also beaten with an iron rod which doctors believe caused the internal injuries which led to her death. She endured three operations, including one which removed 95 per cent of her intestines, and suffered a heart attack before she was airlifted to Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital last Thursday. Doctors there found she had also suffered brain injuries and showed signs of organ failure as they fought to stabilize her. She eventually succumbed to her injuries early on Saturday.
Her death provoked a day of soul searching throughout India’s media on the treatment of women in the country as sparse details of her life, plans and her family’s hopes for her began to emerge.
Friends and neighbours told AFP the unnamed girl referred to on local TV channels as ‘India’s daughter’ had been preparing to marry in February. "They had made all the wedding preparations and had planned a wedding party in Delhi… I really loved this girl. She was the brightest of all,” said close friend Meena Rai.
The Hindustan Times newspaper dedicated its front page to ‘Delhi’s Girl’ with a single piece of prose outlining the few details known about her.
She was the joker of her family who always entertained her two younger brothers and tutored neighbours’ children to boost her family’s income. She was a dedicated student determined to get a well-paid job to help repay her father who had sold his ancestral home to fund her tuition. She was a fan of India’s popular television show Bigg Boss and was looking forward to starting a full time job and buying a new mobile phone, the paper said. She was a typical, hard-working middle class Delhi girl who made the best of what she had.
The decision of the prime minister and Congress party president to receive her body at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport highlighted the extent to which the government has been stung by criticism of its failure to reduce the number of assaults on women.
They have promised fast-track courts to clear the backlog of sexual assault and rape cases in the capital, and an inquiry to review existing laws and boost measures to make women feel safer. Women’s safety campaigners however say both the Congress Party and the main opposition BJP are guilty of fielding candidates charged with rape and sexual harassment of women.
Delhi has been called India’s ‘rape capital’ because it has more than double the number of recorded rapes than Mumbai which has two million more people. Rapes in the capital have increased from 414 in 2010 to 635 this year, but campaigners says only one in 50 rapes are reported to the police. Sexual assaults and harassment in Delhi are often dismissed light-hearted ‘Eve-teasing.’
An editorial in The Hindu newspaper the victim’s “struggle against sexual assault, rape and death shone a harsh light deep into the ugly, rotting interior of our society.” It said demands for the death penalty for rape and capital punishment for the six now accused of her murder would only suit India’s politicians who, it said, want early closure of the issue.
"The past week has shown how the framers and implementers of the law in India are themselves complicit in the very culture of patriarchy that produces, sanctions and makes excuses for violence against women.”

Central African Republic Rebels Threaten To Enter Capital

Rebels in Central African Republic could enter the capital Bangui as early as "tonight, or tomorrow morning" and are still not committed to peace talks that regional leaders are trying to organise, a spokesman said on Sunday.
African Union Chairman Thomas Yayi Boni is due to meet CAR President Francois Bozize on Sunday afternoon to lay the groundwork for talks with the rebels meant to take place in Gabon in early January.
"We are waiting to see what comes out of today's meeting between Bozize and ... Yayi Boni before we make a final decision," SELEKA rebel spokesman Nelson Ndjadder said by telephone from France. "We could march into Bangui tonight or tomorrow morning," he said.
Ndjadder confirmed that the rebels had positions about 75 kilometres (45 miles) outside Bangui following a swift advance from the country's northwest since early December.
The rebel onslaught has highlighted the instability of a country that has remained poor and turbulent since independence from France in 1960 despite rich deposits of uranium, gold and diamonds. Average income is barely over $2 a day.
With a government that holds little sway outside the capital, some parts of the country have long endured the consequences of conflicts spilling over from troubled neighbours Chad, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

US Troops To Aid Staff Evacuation In Chad

President Barack Obama said 50 US troops have deployed to the African country of Chad to help evacuate US citizens and embassy personnel from the neighbouring Central African Republic's capital of Bangui in the face of rebel advances toward the city.
Mr Obama informed congressional leaders of Thursday's deployment in a letter citing a "deteriorating security situation" in the Central African Republic.
The evacuation of the US diplomats comes in the wake of criticism of the Obama administration's handling of diplomatic security at its consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
The ambassador and three other Americans were killed in a September 11 attack.
In the Central African Republic, rebels have seized at least 10 northern towns. On Saturday they continued their advance, seizing the city of Sibut, 114 miles from Bangui.

Jobseekers Die During Fitness Test

Officials in South Africa have launched an investigation after the deaths of seven jobseekers who collapsed in the heat while undergoing a fitness test for positions as traffic officers.
The chief transport official for KwaZulu-Natal province, Willies Mchunu, has suspended further tests.
The state-owned South African Broadcasting Corporation reported that several tens of thousands of people took the fitness test late last week, even though only 90 jobs were available.
They were required to run 2.5 miles in temperatures of more than 30C, and many collapsed from dehydration and heat exhaustion. Some received hospital treatment.
South Africa's official statistics show that the unemployment rate is 25%, an indication why so many were applying for the 90 jobs.

BREAKING: Delhi Gang-Rape Victim Dies In Hospital In Singapore

A female student gang-raped on a bus in India's capital Delhi has died at a Singapore hospital, doctors say.
"The patient passed away peacefully at 4:45am on 29 Dec 2012," a statement from the hospital said. The patient's family had been by her side, it added.
The 23-year-old had arrived in Singapore on Thursday after undergoing three operations in a Delhi hospital.
The attack earlier this month triggered violent public protests in India that left one police officer dead.
"The patient had remained in an extremely critical condition since admission to Mount Elizabeth Hospital," a statement from hospital chief executive Kelvin Loh said.
"She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome," the statement went on.
"We are humbled by the privilege of being tasked to care for her in her final struggle," Mr Loh said.

Update: Injured Kogi State Governor Airlifted To Abuja… Leg ‘Totally Broken’

New indications have emerged that Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State who was involved in a ghastly motor accident some few hours ago in which his ADC was killed, may have lost one of his legs.
Doctors at the Lokoja Specialist Hospital where Mr. Wada received first aid treatment said his leg is "totally broken."
A government official who revealed that the governor was brought into the intensive care unit with a severely fractured femur according to the doctors, added that they said he is in good condition and did not sustain major head or spinal cord injuries.
"There is hope," he said.
According to a source in the government house, the state government arranged for a helicopter which flew the governor to the National Hospital in Abuja.

Laurie added: "Julie needs to tell the story of her relationship with Johnny herself."

Shakira Still Pregnant As News Of Birth Was A Prank By Gerard Pique

We awoke this morning to the good news that Shakira had given birth to a baby boy. Well at least we thought we had as Gerard Pique's tweet announcing the 'birth of his son' has turned out to be a hoax.
Taking to the social networking site earlier today, the hot footballer tweeted:
"Our son was born! We're very happy! Thank you all for your messages", in Spanish.
However, Shakira is still with child as Gerard was playing a prank on his fans and followers as today is the Spanish equivalent of April Fool's day, Dia de los Inocentes, according to a source who told E! News.
Nice one Gerard!
Speaking about the impending arrival of his son during a radio interview, Gerard admitted that they are still deciding on what to call their little bundle of joy:
“Concerning the name, we just haven’t been able to decide.
“There are ridiculous names, like Ulisito, that came out of the press’ need to report nonsense. 'There was also Biel, which we like, but I don’t think it will be that one either, or Gerard. We’ll see.”

Chinese Government Tightens Internet Control

Internet 1

Beijing has tightened its control over the Internet under new laws approved by the legislature. The move, ostensibly aimed at data protection, means users will no longer be able to post anonymous online complaints.
Regulations adopted by the Communist Party's Standing Committee on Friday mean Internet users will have to register their real names online.
The rules also give the government power to delete posts that it deems illegal.
According to the official Xinhua news agency, the legislation was approved to "enhance the protection of personal information online and safeguard public interests."
It is the first time the Chinese government has put such measures as deleting posts into law, although censorship is understood to be commonplace.
According to the new rules: "Service providers are required to instantly stop the transmission of illegal information once it is spotted and take relevant measures, including removing the information and saving records, before reporting to supervisory authorities."
The move has prompted criticism from those who fear it might discourage the online exposure of corruption after a series of scandals by party officials.
The news agency Reuters reported the head of parliament's legislative affairs committee, Li Fei, as saying the new rules meant people had nothing to fear from reporting corruption using the Internet.
However, he warned: "When people exercise their rights, including the right to use the Internet, they must do so in accordance with the law and constitution, and not harm the legal rights of the state, society ... or other citizens."
Dozens of human rights activists are understood to have been jailed for posting online content deemed illegal.
As well as monitoring Internet use, Beijing restricts access to and popular foreign sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Germany Compiles First Nationwide Gun Register

Guns on sale (Photo: dpa)

Germany has compiled a national register of firearms for the first time. Figures previously held by a multitude of local authorities have been centrally pooled as part of efforts to curb gun violence.
Germany's new national firearms registry established that there were 5.5 million legal guns in private ownership nationwide.
Figures compiled in what has been described as Germany's first reliable nationwide firearms count also showed there were 1.4 million registered owners - an average of approximately four weapons per listed individual.
The information is being collated in a national database that will allow police to keep track of the buying and selling of legal guns across the country. Records were previously kept only at a local level, with some 551 different authorities holding the information.
As the figures were published on Friday, Interior Ministry spokesman Philipp Spauschus said the registry would make a "concrete contribution to public safety."
All European Union countries are required to set up such a registry by 2015.
The issue of gun crime has once again gained prominence in the German media following the US gun massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in which 26 people were killed including 20 children.
Germany has also suffered from mass shootings, the most notable recent example being the Winnenden school shooting in 2009, in which 16 people died. The perpetrator of that incident, 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer, used a legally-owned firearm belonging to his father.

US Envoys Leave Central African Republic

Security concerns deepened in the capital of Central African Republic on Friday after the US ambassador and his diplomatic team were evacuated out of the country by plane overnight amid fears rebels could try to take the capital.
US officials said about 40 people were evacuated on a US Air Force plane bound for Kenya. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorised to discuss the details of the operation.
The evacuation came after President Francois Bozize on Thursday urgently called on former colonial ruler France and other foreign powers to help his government fend off rebels who are quickly seizing territory and approaching the capital.
The UN's most powerful body condemned the recent violence and expressed concern about the developments.
"The members of the Security Council reiterate their demand that the armed groups immediately cease hostilities, withdraw from captured cities and cease any further advance towards the city of Bangui," the statement said.
Central African Republic has a history of violent change in government. The current president himself came to power nearly a decade ago in the wake of a rebellion in this resource-rich yet deeply poor country.
Speaking to crowds in Bangui, a city of some 600 000, Bozize pleaded with foreign powers to do what they could. He pointed in particular to France, Central African Republic's former colonial ruler.
About 200 French soldiers are already in the country, providing technical support and helping to train the local army, according to the French defence ministry.
"France has the means to stop [the rebels] but unfortunately they have done nothing for us until now," Bozize said.
French President Francois Hollande said on Thursday that France wants to protect its interests in Central African Republic and not Bozize's government. The comments came a day after dozens of protesters, angry about a lack of help against rebel forces, threw rocks at the French Embassy in Bangui and stole a French flag.
Paris is encouraging peace talks between the government and the rebels, with the French Foreign Ministry noting in a statement that negotiations are due to "begin shortly in Libreville [Gabon]". But it was not immediately clear if any dates have been set for those talks.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius spoke via phone with Bozize, asking the president to take responsibility for the safety of French nationals and diplomatic missions in Central African Republic.
Bozize's government earlier reached out to long-time ally Chad, which pledged to send 2 000 troops to bolster Central African Republic's own forces.
This landlocked nation of some 4.4 million people has suffered decades of army revolts, coups and rebellions since gaining independence in 1960 and remains one of the poorest countries in the world.
The rebels behind the most recent instability signed a 2007 peace accord allowing them to join the regular army, but insurgent leaders say the deal wasn't fully implemented.
The rebel forces have seized at least 10 towns across the sparsely populated north of the country, and residents in the capital now fear the insurgents could attack at any time, despite assurances by rebel leaders that they are willing to engage in dialogue instead of attacking Bangui.
The rebels have claimed that their actions are justified in light of the "thirst for justice, for peace, for security and for economic development of the people of Central African Republic".
Despite Central African Republic's wealth of gold, diamonds, timber and uranium, the government remains perpetually cash-strapped. Filip Hilgert, a researcher with Belgium-based International Peace Information Service, said rebel groups are unhappy because they feel the government doesn't invest in their areas.
"The main thing they say is that the north of the country, and especially in their case the northeast, has always been neglected by the central government in all ways," he said.
The rebels also are demanding that the government make payments to ex-combatants, suggesting that their motives may also be for personal financial gain.

Messi Turns Down Whopping £460,000-a-WEEK Deal After Anzhi Trigger His £205m Barcelona Release Clause

Record-breaker: The deal would've eclipsed the world record fee of £80m rivals Real Madrid paid for Cristiano Ronaldo

Lionel Messi turned down a blockbusting move to an unknown Russian club after a bid of £205million triggered his release clause.
The club, thought to be Anzhi Makhachkala, then offered a blockbusting £460,000-a-week deal to the Argentine superstar, a massive £24m a year after tax, according to The Sun.
Barcelona were obliged to accept the massive offer but a gobsmacked Messi quickly rejected the move after discussions with Barca president Sandro Rosell and his family.
The three-time World Player of the Year, who scored a record breaking 91 goals this calendar year, then pledged his future by signing a new deal with the Catalan giants.

Scores feared Dead After Boat Sinks Off Bissau

Twenty-two people died and more than 75 were missing after an overloaded boat sank off the coast of Guinea-Bissau on Friday, hospital and port officials said. The narrow wooden boat was ferrying 97 passengers and their luggage to the West African nation's capital Bissau from the island of Bolama when it began taking on water and sank around 11 a.m. (1100 GMT), Bissau Port Director Mario Domingos Gomes said.
Hospital sources said 22 bodies had arrived at the morgue in Bissau. Domingos Gomes said rescuers were searching for survivors from the pirogue, a hand-built vessel most often used for fishing across West Africa.
Tiny Guinea-Bissau is among the world's least developed nations and has been plagued by political turmoil since independence from Portugal in 1974.
As in much of the region, travel by land and sea is difficult and dangerous due to poor infrastructure and weak regulatory oversight.

US Teachers Flock To Shooting Lessons

Teachers Weapons

Several US states are considering allowing school teachers to carry weapons and educators, determined not to allow a repeat of the Newtown massacre, are flocking to training sessions.
As gun control advocates try to outlaw military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, gun enthusiasts, backed by the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA), are taking a very different approach.
The gun lobby argues that there is no way to stop crazy or evil people doing bad things and so the only sure-fire way to prevent mass shootings like the one at Sandy Hook primary is to take down the shooter.
In a rare press conference one week after 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot dead 20 six and seven-year-olds and six adults with a Bushmaster AR-15 assault rifle, the NRA called for armed guards in every school in the country.
But in Utah, one of the handful of American states that currently allows people to carry licensed concealed weapons into public schools, many teachers are unwilling to wait and see which political argument wins out.
In response to Newtown, the Utah Shooting Sports Council (USSC) waived its fee on Thursday for educators wanting to participate in training sessions to gain permits to carry concealed weapons.
More than half of the roughly 400 education professionals that showed an interest had to be turned away because there wasn't enough room on the course.
"We had about 400 that wanted to do it and we only had seating for about 180," USSC board member Bill Scott said.
The surge in interest was seen by organisers as a direct response to the shooting in Newtown, with teachers showing a heightened awareness that people are responsible for their own safety and wanted their own permits.
"A lot of these people may have shot all their lives and some of them may have never touched a gun," Mr Scott said.
"We're not advocating that all teachers should be armed. We're just saying that those that choose to be armed, that want to get the training, they have the right to do that in Utah, we'd like to facilitate that."
While teachers train themselves to try to stop the next Lanza, state officials like Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne are busily crafting legislation to make sure they can legally do so.
"The proposal is that any school that wishes to do so may designate the principal or another designee to receive training in the use of firearms and how to handle emergencies such as that which occurred in Newtown," he said.
Ideally there would be an armed police officer in every school, but due to budget considerations this may not be possible, so training a designated teacher to handle firearms was "the next best solution," Mr Horne said.
Pro-gun politicians in Florida, Minnesota, Oregon, South Dakota and Tennessee have also vowed to propose legislation in the coming months that would allow for armed teachers in schools.
"Hopefully, these monsters, these animals that are doing this stuff will stay away from the schools," said Mr Scott.
"Our view also is that it's not just that you would actively engage the shooter, just the fact that the bad guys know that teachers are armed in Utah is a huge deterrent.
"They tend to pick targets where they know there will be lots of innocent victims and they're not going to encounter any resistance."
As teachers stripped semi-automatic pistols on tables at the USSC gathering, Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein was putting the final touches to a bill that would ban weapons like the one Lanza used in Newtown.
Gun rights advocates, led by the NRA, are stringently against such measures.
"The thing about them being assault weapons, it's a misnomer," said Mr Scott.
"These weapons are no different than a standard sporting weapon. We don't support any bans on those because true military weapons are already banned in the United States."

Ewww! Scientists Confirm There Is No Danger To Peeing In The Pool Like Olympic Swimmers Michael Phelps And Ryan Lochte

Partners in crime

Scientists are now confirming that Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte's admission that they urinate in the swimming pool is really not such a big deal after all.
The U.S. swimming star Phelps shockingly told The Wall Street Journal this summer during the London Olympics that 'everyone pees in the pool,' after his fellow American, Lochte, divulged that he engaged in the practice.
Though parents try to convince their children that while swimming one must control the urges and exit to use the toilet, the professionals seemed to brush aside any negative connotation regarding using the pool as a toilet.
'It's kind of a normal thing to do for swimmers. When we're in the water for two hours, we don't really get out to pee,' Phelps told The Journal.
'Chlorine kills it so it’s not bad,' he said.
Phelps, 27, was only pressed on the subject after his teammate Lochte, 28, had told Ryan Seacrest in August that peeing in the pool is actually pretty common.
'Of course. I think there's just something about getting into chlorine water that you just automatically go. [I didn't] during the races, but I sure did in warm-up,' he told Seacrest on August 3.
The Olympic stars didn't seem too embarrassed about the big reveal and Lochte even starred in a Funny or Die video, making fun of himself.
But after the hullabaloo over their revelations, a scientist has now confirmed that urinating in a pool really isn't such a big deal.
In a year-end review titled 'Celebrities and Science 2012' a UK non-profit Sense About Science (SAS) asked biochemist Stuart Jones to weigh in on the situation.
'Urine is essentially sterile so there isn't actually anything to kill in the first place. Urine is largely just salts and water with moderate amounts of protein and DNA breakdown products,' he said when asked about urinating in a pool.
'Peeing in a swimming pool, even if all swimmers do it simultaneously, has very little impact on the composition of the pool water itself,' he added.
Though Phelps' assertion proved to be correct by a man of science, few celebrities fared as well.
The SAS report pointed to athletes like soccer player Mario Balotelli and tennis stars Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams that have been seen sporting colored sport's tape to apparently help mend injuries.
But sports scientist, Professor Greg Whyte said the there is little evidence to suggest the tape actually provides relief, other than the placebo effect.

Indian State Plans 65 All-Women Police Stations

The woman chief minister of India's West Bengal state unveiled plans for 65 all-female police stations, as authorities tried to assuage growing anger over a gang-rape in New Delhi.
"Sixty-five all-women police stations will be set up across West Bengal to deal with crimes against women," Mamata Banerjee, the firebrand leader of the Trinamool party, told a rally in the north of the state.
"Ten of these stations are already functioning," she added.
Ms Banerjee, who was until recently a coalition ally of the main ruling Congress party, also announced that 158 new courts were being set up in the state to fast-track cases involving crimes against women.
Her comments came after the federal government launched a drive to recruit more female officers as a confidence-building measure.
That campaign will start in the capital Delhi, where a 23-year-old student was brutally gang-raped on a bus on December 16, sparking nationwide protests.
The lack of women officers has been widely blamed for the failures of some police forces to thoroughly investigate allegations of sex crimes. Women currently account for less than one in five Indian police officers.

CNN Host Piers Morgan: Bible Needs Amendment, It Is Flawed 'Cuz of Gays

CNN host Piers Morgan has said he believes the Bible and the U.S. Constitution are 'inherently flawed' and that the Bible needs an amendment changing its stance on same-sex marriage.
The bold statements come days after the British journalist divided America with his strict stance on gun laws following the Sandy Hook massacre, even sparking e-petitions to deport him.
While interviewing Pastor Rick Warren on his CNN show, he said: 'Both the Bible and the Constitution were well intentioned but they are basically, inherently flawed. Hence, the need to amend it.'
Warren, who is against same-sex marriage replied: 'Not a chance. What I believe is flawed is human opinion, because it constantly changes.'
'But you and I know the Bible is, in many places, a flawed document,' Morgan continued. 'My point to you about gay rights for example - it's time for an amendment to the Bible. You should compile a new Bible.'
With Warren responding that he believes that the Bible reveals the truth - and the truth is never outdated - Morgan quipped: 'We’re going to agree to disagree on that.'
His remarks sparked anger among conservatives, including Paul Kengor, the executive director of The Center for Vision and Values at Grove City College.
'It's remarkable to watch secular liberals like Piers Morgan assume unto themselves the extraordinary authority to divine what in the Bible is true and what is not, what is flawed and what is not, and where certain "amendments" supposedly need to occur,' he told Fox News.
It is just the latest of Morgan's outspoken opinions to be spotlighted after he offended thousands of Americans with his anti-gun remarks.
He has demanded tighter U.S. gun laws following the Sandy Hook massacre and last week on Piers Morgan Tonight, he interviewed a gun advocate and called him an 'unbelievably stupid man'.

On December 21, a man in Texas launched a petition on the White House e-petition website demanding Morgan be deported immediately for 'exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens'.
The petition accuses Morgan of engaging in a 'hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution' by targeting the Second Amendment - the right to bear arms.
It has already garnered more than 84,000 signatures - far exceeding the 25,000 signature threshold required to get a White House response.
But Morgan seemed unfazed by the effort to oust him.
In a series of Twitter messages, he urged his followers to sign the petition and in response to one article about the petition even said: 'Bring it on'.
He wrote: 'If I do get deported from America for wanting fewer gun murders, are there any other countries that will have me?'
But a second petition on the same website now insists he must stay in the US, not only because he has a constitutional right to free speech but also - 'more important' - because 'no one in the UK wants him back'.
Hundreds have signed the 'Keep Piers Morgan in the USA' petition after it was proposed by Janusz Jasinski, a Birmingham-based website designer.
To add to the former newspaper editor's embarrassment, a third petition is calling on Home Secretary Theresa May to stop him from returning to Britain.
Appearing on the US website Change.org it has so far attracted more than 100 signatures and states: 'We got rid of him once and why should we have to suffer again. The Americans wanted him so they should put up with him.'

Cop Mistakes Bible For Gun And Shoots Man

A Policeman in Brazil has shot and killed a garbage collector after mistaking the Bible he was carrying for a gun.
Police on Friday told reporters that Antonio Marcos dos Santos was stopped by police as he was heading to church in the city of Avare.
When he raised his hands, a police officer saw a bulge in his pocket and, thinking it was a gun, opened fire.
The police officer will remain in detention pending the outcome of an investigation.

Cross River Spends N1.5b On Carnival

Nigeria’s  Cross River State Government spent over N1.5 billion on this month’s  carnival in Calabar, the Chairman of the Cross River State Carnival Commission, Mr Gabe Onah, said on Thursday.
Onah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar that the money was spent on facilities and logistics for the event.
The chairman said the amount went up because participation of local and foreign visitors had risen, compared to previous years.
He said facilities provided at the carnival include pavilions for exhibitors, costumes and mobile toilets.
“There is adequate security in the state to erode the negative impression the foreigners have over insecurity in the country,” he said.
Onah said that part of the money was given to about 30,000 indigenes at the carnival, foreign artists and some other participants.
He expressed the commission’s appreciation to core sponsors of the carnival for making the occasion a success.
“The entire indigenes are so grateful to our core sponsors and grateful for being part of promoting their lives and culture,” he said.
He thanked the state Governor, Liyel Imoke, for his moral support toward making the carnival successful.
Onah urged government to support the organisers to ensure continuity. The carnival will end on 31 December.

China Orders People To Visit Their Aged Parents...Or Be Sued

Visit your parents. That's an order!
So says China, whose national legislature on Friday amended its law on the elderly to require that adult children visit their aged parents "often" — or risk being sued by them.
The amendment does not specify how frequently such visits should occur.
State media say the new clause will allow elderly parents who feel neglected by their children to take them to court. The move comes as reports abound of elderly parents being abandoned or ignored by their children.
A rapidly developing China is facing increasing difficulty in caring for its aging population. Three decades of market reforms have accelerated the breakup of the traditional extended family in China, and there are few affordable alternatives, such as retirement or care homes, for the elderly or others unable to live on their own.
Earlier this month, state media reported that a grandmother in her 90s in the prosperous eastern province of Jiangsu had been forced by her son to live in a pig pen for two years. News outlets frequently carry stories about other parents being abused or neglected, or of children seeking control of their elderly parents' assets without their knowledge.
The expansion of China's elderly population is being fueled both by an increase in life expectancy — from 41 to 73 over five decades — and by family planning policies that limit most families to a single child. Rapid aging poses serious threats to the country's social and economic stability, as the burden of supporting the growing number of elderly passes to a proportionately shrinking working population and the social safety net remains weak.

BREAKING: Gang Rampages In Nigeria Town

Attackers on Friday opened fire and threw explosives at government buildings in a north-eastern Nigerian town along the border with Cameroon that has hit previously by robbery gangs, police and residents said.
It was unclear if there were casualties from the attacks in Maiha. Some residents said they suspected Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, but criminal gangs have also repeatedly carried out violence around border posts in the area.
"We received information on the attacks in Maiha," said Adamawa state police spokesperson Mohammed Ibrahim.
"We are on our way to Maiha to assess the situation and until we get there I can't give details on damage and casualty recorded."
Residents said a group of about 40 gunmen arrived in the town around 01:00 in all-terrain vehicles, on motorcycles and on foot chanting "Allahu Akbar".
They then opened fire and threw explosives at a police station, a prison, a courthouse, an education administrative building and a government lodge, leaving them badly damaged, according to residents.
Violence linked to Boko Haram's insurgency in northern and central Nigeria is believed to have left some 3 000 people dead since 2009, including killings by the security forces.
However, some Nigerian border areas are also notorious for violence linked to criminal activity, and gangs have also carried out attacks under the guise of Boko Haram.

Berlusconi Ordered To Pay '€3M Monthly Alimony

Ex-Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi must pay his second wife Veronica Lario €3m a month in a divorce settlement, reports say.
But he gets to keep their estate, the Corriere della Sera newspaper said.
The paperwork was filed on Christmas Day at Milan’s tribunal.
Ms Lario announced she was divorcing the billionaire media mogul in 2009, citing his presence at the 18th birthday party of a Naples girl and his fondness for younger women.
The couple met in a dressing room in 1980 after Mr Berlusconi saw Ms Lario perform in a Milan theatre, were married in 1990 and have three grown children.
He has two children from his first marriage.
The 76-year-old Mr Berlusconi is dating a woman nearly 50 years his junior.

Jennifer Lopez Extortion Lawsuit Dismissed: Judge Throws Out Singer's $20 Million Lawsuit

Jennifer Lopez got some bad news just in time for the new year.
TMZ reports that the $20 million lawsuit the singer filed against her former driver has been dismissed.
A judge has sided with Lopez’s onetime chauffeur Hakob Manoukian, who started the legal battle when he sued the 43-year-old singer for wrongful termination and breach of contract. Manoukian claimed he'd been forced out of the job after Lopez's manager Benny Medina berated him in public and stripped him of certain responsibilities.
In turn, Lopez countersued, claiming that Manoukian had tried to extort her for $2.8 million or he would go public with confidential information about the singer that could have her criminally prosecuted.
Manoukian’s lawyers filed a motion to dimiss Lopez’s countersuit, arguing that she was trying to punish him for filing a legitimate employment lawsuit against her, and the judge agreed.
Manoukian’s original lawsuit against Lopez is still pending, and Lopez is developing quite the reputation for getting those around her fired.
In November, the former "American Idol" judge defended herself against rumors that she got a maid fired after the German hotel employee requested an autograph. The singer took to Twitter and wrote:
"C'mon thought you knew me better than this.. Would never get anyone fired over an autograph. 1st I heard of this was on twitter. #hurtful."

Mubarak Has Cracked Ribs, Fluid In Lungs

Ousted president Hosni Mubarak has a build-up of fluid in his lungs and cracked ribs, Egypt's official news agency MENA reported after he was transferred from prison to military hospital for treatment.
The state prosecutor ordered Mubarak's transfer on Thursday after his health deteriorated, a prosecution source had said, more than a week after he was briefly hospitalised after slipping in a prison bathroom and hurting his head.
MENA reported late on Thursday that x-rays showed that Mubarak fractured several ribs in the fall and also had a build-up of fluid in the membranes lining his lungs.
The agency cited a medical report prepared at the prosecutor's request.
Mubarak, who is serving a life sentence for his role in the killing of protesters during the uprising that led to his resignation in February 2011, will return to jail after treatment, the prosecution source said.
A court sentenced the veteran strongman to life in June for failing to prevent the killings of protesters during the 18-day revolt that ended his three-decade rule. Around 850 people died in the uprising.
Since his fall from power, Mubarak's health has appeared to worsen significantly, and he has had repeated health scares.
He spent nearly a month in hospital after falling unconscious on 19 June, with state media declaring him clinically dead on arrival. Medical sources, however, said he appeared to have fallen into a temporary coma.
During his time in power, the subject of Mubarak's health was very much off limits.
In 2004, he underwent surgery in Germany for a slipped disc, and he returned to Germany in March 2010 for the removal of his gall bladder and a growth on the small intestine.

Gunmen Kill Kenyan Policeman In Ambush

Suspected Islamists shot dead a Kenyan policeman in an ambush in the restive northeastern border town of Mandera, the latest in a string of attacks near the border with Somalia, police said on Friday.
"The officer was on patrol when the gunmen opened fire on him and fled," a senior police officer in the region said. The attack happened on Thursday night.
"There were four attackers. We suspect they are Shebab Islamists who have been attacking security officers," he added.
"They also took away his rifle but his colleague escaped unhurt."
Regional police chief Philip Tuimur confirmed the incident, saying the police were looking for the attackers but that no arrests had been made.
Similar attacks and cross-border raids in the region have been blamed on Somalia's al-Qaeda linked Shebab insurgents or their Kenyan supporters, who vowed revenge after Nairobi invaded Somalia last year.
The Shebab still control large parts of southern Somalia, despite African Union troops, allied Somali forces and Ethiopian soldiers having wrested control of several key towns from them.
