Russian Emergencies Minister In Emergency Plane Landing

Russia’s Emergencies Minister faced an emergency of his own when his plane lost power to one of its engines.
Vladimir Puchkov was flying Friday to the Siberian city of Novosibirsk aboard a Yak-42, a mid-range passenger jet with three rear-mounted engines.
The pilots were able to land the jet safely at Novosibirsk’s Tolmachevo Airport, ministry spokeswoman told the Interfax news agency. There was no immediate indication of what caused the engine failure.
A day earlier, Puchkov was quoted as denying speculation that the world will come to an end on Dec. 21, as many people believe the Mayan calendar predicts.
He told the newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta not to expect “serious cataclysms” on that day.

R Kelly Announces Plans For 'Trapped In The Closet' Book

R Kelly announces plans for 'Trapped In The Closet' book

R Kelly has said that he is writing a prequel book to his hip-hop opera Trapped In The Closet.
Speaking to Fast Company, via Pitchfork, the R'n'B star said that the book also features in the current chapters of the musical project. He said:

The 'Trapped in the Closet' book you see as an infomercial in the new chapters is a book that's on its way, that I'm writing.
He added of the characters which feature in the opera: "I know where Chuck was before he met Rufus. I know what was happening before they actually met. I know what happened with Bridget and the midget and everybody else's situation. So I feel like the fans have supported 'Trapped in the Closet,' so I feel like it's time to introduce them to these people before what they saw."
He continued: "It's the prequel meeting the sequel. You'll get to find out a lot of things you don't know, or that you can’t know, unless you read the book or unless I tell you - so I decided to do a book on it."
News of the book comes after R Kelly also revealed that he is turning Trapped In The Closet into a Broadway musical.
Speaking at the premiere of the new chapters at New York's Landmark Sunshine Theatre earlier this month, Kelly revealed that he has plans to take the show onto Broadway.
In a post-screening Q&A, Kelly announced he "just got an offer from Broadway to do a Broadway version" and was in the process of adapting the shorts for the stage.

One Direction Announces New Fragrance, Gives Justin Bieber Serious Competition

Sorry Justin Bieber, but it looks like you’re going to face some serious competition in the teen fragrance market next year.
One Direction recently inked a licensing deal with Olivann Beauty to release a fragrance next fall. The perfume will launch globally in 2013,reports Women’s Wear Daily. Teen crooners Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne have been working with the luxury fragrance company for the past six months developing their signature scent — and it’s sure to drive their female fans crazy.
Although 1D is keeping quiet on the official details, fans will be able to buy the perfume in cities the band is hitting on their world tour next year, with even more markets to follow. The band plans to unveil the name of the scent early next year.
The announcement comes on the heels of One Direction’s impressive sophomore album debut. The band’s second album, Take Me Home, sold over 500,000 copies in its first week, topping the U.S. albums chart. The lads also announced their plans to release a 3D concert film — with Morgan Spurlock at the helm — in August. 2013.

Holy Scenes: German Producers Plan Pope Benedict Biopic

Two German producers have bought the film rights to an upcoming biography of Pope Benedict by the Bavarian author of three best-selling interview books with the pontiff.
The Odeon Film company said producers Marcus Mende and Peter Weckert planned a film for international release based on a biography by journalist Peter Seewald due to be published in early 2014.
Seewald's book-length interviews with Benedict - two as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and one as pope - have given readers many insights into the life and thoughts of the shy theologian who now heads the Roman Catholic Church.
Seewald has signed on as a consultant to the scriptwriter, Odeon Film said in a statement on Thursday. It gave no information about the schedule for the film or who might play the main role.
"The producers plan an international film that illustrates all aspects of the extraordinary life and work of Joseph Ratzinger from his birth on Easter night in 1927 in Marktl am Inn in Bavaria to his pontificate today," it said.
Benedict's predecessor Pope John Paul was the subject of a dozen documentary films around the world and two major television movies in the United States.

Katy Perry Named Billboard's Woman Of The Year

Katy Perry

Katy Perry has been named Billboard's Woman of the Year.
The 'Teenage Dream' singer feels ''honoured'' to have been granted the coveted award and is proud to be regarded as a strong, independent woman as well as recognised for her musical talent.
She told Billboard magazine: ''When I heard, I was very honoured. I was also a bit surprised because I thought my year was over! Especially with ending the tour last year, but it's nice to see that it's been extended. It does feel like this record has never ended!
''It's nice, I really appreciate it. I like to be viewed as a strong woman and I think that's what Billboard is basically saying.''
The sexy pop star has had a mammoth year, completing a 12-month, 124-date tour in 2011 as well as releasing her first 3D fly-on-the-wall concert movie 'Katy Perry: Part Of Me'.
She has also overcome heartbreak after divorcing comedian Russell Brand in January and turned successful entrepreneur. She will be releasing her third fragrance in 2013. Katy has recently been spotted house-hunting for a love nest with her boyfriend John Mayer in Los Angeles.

Halle Berry Will Pay Gabriel Aubry's Medical And Legal Bills

Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez have agreed to pay for all of Gabriel Aubry's legal and medical bills.
The 'Cloud Atlas' star and her French fiance, 46, have reached a settlement with her four year old daughter Nahla's father, 36, following a vicious fight between him and Olivier last week and agreed to cover all of his bills stemming from the fight and their bitter custody battle.
A source told gossip website RadarOnline: ''The settlement that was reached between Halle and Gabe in the aftermath of his arrest for allegedly getting into a fight with Olivier Martinez, includes an agreement that the couple will pay for the Canadian model's legal and medical bills. Without admitting ANY guilt, Olivier agreed to pay for Gabe's medical bills because he suffered the brunt of the injuries from the fight.

''Olivier is a former boxer, and his dad is a retired professional fighter. Gabe won't be responsible for legal bills he incurred for obtaining a temporary restraining order against Olivier, those will be covered by Halle. The settlement discussions between Halle's lawyer, Blair Berk, and Gabe's attorney, Shawn Holley, were extremely professional. Both Halle and Gabe didn't want this drama to continue to play out, and wanted a quick resolution for the sake of their daughter, Nahla.''
The 46-year-old actress has also assured the Canadian model that Olivier will not be involved in their parenting issues in the future.
An insider said: ''Olivier will NOT be present in the future during the times that Nahla is dropped off and picked up between Gabriel and Halle. This was very important to Gabe going forward because he feared for his safety. Gabe was supposed to have Nahla on Thanksgiving (22.11.12), according to their custody agreement, but Halle asked if she could have the little girl that day and Gabe said yes. He had no obligation to do so, but he had been acting in good faith and knew it meant a lot to Halle, so he did it. Gabe was absolutely blindsided by Olivier and his rage.''

Carrie Underwood Cast As Maria In New 'Sound Of Music'

FILE - In this Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012 file photo, Carrie Underwood arrives at the 40th Anniversary American Music Awards in Los Angeles. Underwood will star in NBC's live broadcast of “The Sound of Music” late next year, according to a news release Friday, Nov. 30, 2012. (Photo by Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP, File)

Next year's holiday season will have televisions everywhere alive with "The Sound of Music" -- as sung by Carrie Underwood.
How do you solve a problem like casting Maria, a role made so iconic by Julie Andrews, in the new NBC version of the musical?
Only by tapping a singer as popular as Underwood, a country superstar and "American Idol" winner.
"Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp," said head of NBC Entertainment Robert Greenblatt.
Based on a true story, "Sound of Music" revolves around Maria, a nun who becomes a governess for the seven children of widower Captain von Trapp. They fall in love, but the shadow of World War II threatens their future.

Maria von Trapp "was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist," Greenblatt said.
This will be Underwood's first major lead acting role; she's appeared on "How I Met Your Mother" and in the film "Soul Surfer."
She isn't the only "Idol" alum to graduate to acting. Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar for her role in the movie "Dreamgirls," and will be starring on NBC's "Smash" with Katharine McPhee. Constantine Maroulis and Clay Aiken have both enjoyed stage success. And recent season contestants Paul McDonald and Jessica Sanchez appeared on "Parenthood" and "Glee," respectively.
NBC's take on the Rogers and Hammerstein classic will be based on the original Broadway show, which starred Mary Martin. It will premiere sometime in the 2013 holiday season.
Wonder who'll play the captain?

Adele's "21" Sells 10 Million, Rihanna Leads Billboard

British singer and Grammy darling Adele reached the 10 million sales mark in the United States on Wednesday with her heartbreak album "21" becoming the first by British woman to reach the milestone, Nielsen SoundScan said.
"21," released in February 2011, produced the hits "Someone Like You" and "Rolling In The Deep" and became the top-selling album of 2011. Earlier this year, Adele swept the Grammy Awards with six, including song, record and album of the year.
"21" became the third album to cross 10 million in 2012, along with Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory" and Usher's "Confessions." But it is the only album to reach the milestone in less than two years in the last decade, Nielsen said.
"What an incredible honor," Adele said in a statement. "A huge, huge thank you to my American fans for embracing this record on such a massive level."
"21" will receive the diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America, marking its 10 million milestone, joining the ranks of albums by artists such as Michael Jackson, The Beatles and Madonna.

"Adele's unique talent is a gift to music fans, and her success is certainly cause for a celebration of Diamond magnitude," Cary Sherman, RIAA's chairman & CEO, said in a statement.
Adele, 24, is enjoying the success of her latest single "Skyfall," the official theme song for the James Bond film of the same name. It has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide. The singer also gave birth to her first child earlier this year.
On the Billboard 200 chart this week, R&B star Rihanna scored her first No. 1 album with "Unapologetic," selling 238,000 copies.
She held off new entries from "American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips, who landed at No. 4 with his debut album "The World From the Side of the Moon," and country-rock singer Kid Rock, who rounded out the top five with his latest album "Rebel Soul."

Marvel Release New Official Images Of Patriot Armour From The Highly Anticipated Iron Man 3

Flying in soon: Marvel have released some new images from the upcoming Iron Man 3 movie, which is released next year

After months of sneak peeks and teasers Marvel have finally released official stills of Iron Man 3.
The metal superhero will be flying back onto the big screen in April 2013 and things are set to get dramatic.
Judging by the photographs, Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr. will face the toughest fight of his life so far.
After Tony Stark's private life is taken on and destroyed by a new evil, his technology empire is left in ruins.
One still shows someone who is believed to be Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts holding a scratched and broken Iron Man mask.
In another official photograph fans see a clear close up view of USAF Colonel James 'Rhodey' Rhodes in the Iron Patriot armor.
The blue, red and silver costume is very similar in appearance to the outfit that fellow Marvel hero Captain America wears.
Iron Man 3 also introduces new femme fatale Dr. Maya Hansen, who is played by Rebecca Hall.
Hansen is repsonsible for creating a new virus called Extremis and although she is a strong female character, she inevitably needs the helps of Iron Man.
Earlier this year, Hall told Entertainment Tonight: 'I decided to do Iron Man 3 because I've never done the 'hurry up and wait' movie before.
'Even the studio movies I've done have been small studio movies, or indie films that we made on a wing and a prayer.
'I love those, but Iron Man is refreshing in a way because it's something out of my realm of experiences.'

Lift off: The all new Iron Patriot armour features art work and colours similar to Captain America

Robert recently spoke about how excited he was to be working on the latest entry of the series, and said he will return if they keep making good sequels.
He said: 'I know things are looking like that they could go on for a long while.
'As usual in my book, it’s all about quality control and delivering a product that you can have this kind of [positive] reaction to.
If they keep doing that, maybe I’ll keep showing up.'
He also said he was as excited as fans about casting rumors linking Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley and Momemnto favourite Guy Pearce to the film.
He said: '(I can’t wait to work with) any or all of them. It’s funny. Sometimes you have to call for a good old-fashioned British invasion.
'Iron Man 3 is really shaping up to be something special.'
Iron Man 2 made almost £400million globally at the box office, while the first installment raked in just over £350million.

More Than 100 Graves Robbed In Benin for Voodoo Rituals

Tomb raiders have dug up more than 100 graves at a cemetery in Benin since Saturday for what authorities suspect is a black-market trade in human organs and skulls for voodoo ritual fetishes.
The incident is the most serious case of grave-robbing in the West African state, the world capital of voodoo where most of the country's 9 million residents practice a benign form of the official religion.
Authorities in Dangbo, a village 10 km (6 miles) from the capital Porto-Novo, began an investigation after a mason working at the cemetery said he spotted several masked men digging up the graves, from which organs and skulls were removed.
"The desecration of graves is about money in this region," said Joseph Afaton, director of the cemetery. "It is for sacrifices, or for bewitching."
Body parts of humans and rare animals are prized by some people in central Africa for their supposed supernatural powers, and are used in occult ceremonies. Traffickers often obtain human remains from grave robbers, but a recent spate of killings has also been linked to the gruesome trade.
Authorities in Cameroon in September arrested five people suspected of trafficking human body parts after they were discovered at a checkpoint carrying a severed human head.

Joe Jackson Suffers Mild Stroke

joe jackson

Joe Jackson is reportedly recovering well after suffering a mild stroke.
The 84-year-old Jackson family patriarch was rushed to a Las Vegas hospital after on Thursday morning.
He has been grappling with health issues for some time and has suffered two similar strokes in the last five years.
Since he sought care quickly, his loved ones are hoping that his prognosis for a quick recovery will be positive.
“The good thing is that he was taken immediately to the hospital as he was with a couple of people at the time,” a source close to the family said.
The Jackson family is currently embroiled in a bitter feud.
Matriarch Katherine, who is mother to Janet, Jermaine and Randy, is said to be furious with her brood as the fallout over tragic Michael’s estate continues.
Her children Janet, Rebbie and Randy are apparently banned from entering her house, which is rented through the Michael Jackson estate and is also home to his three children after the siblings demanded the executors resign because they claim his 2002 will is a fake.

Syria Throws Kill Switch On Internet

A Syrian rebel talks on a mobile phone during clashes.

Opposition activists and monitoring firms say Syria has cut internet and phone services for the first time since the civil war started more than 18 months ago.
It is believed the government is trying to thwart rebel communications after suffering a series of setbacks in fighting recently.
There are reports rebel fighters have moved to within three kilometres of the Damascus international airport, and there are numerous reports of mortar fire nearby.
Monitoring companies said Syria cut all its links to the internet, and it is not clear if service has been restored.
Akamai, a firm which monitors global traffic, said traffic stopped from 10:26am GMT on Thursday, supporting the observation from another IT firm, Renesys, "that Syria is effectively off the internet."
Renesys said in a blog posting that its monitoring showed "Syria's international internet connectivity shut down".
"Looking closely at the continuing internet blackout in Syria, we can see that trace routes into Syria are failing, exactly as one would expect for a major outage," Renesys chief technology officer James Cowie said.
Mr Cowie said in a blog posting that "there are a few Syrian networks that are still connected to the internet... but the originator of the routes is actually Tata Communications. These are potentially offshore, rather than domestic, and perhaps not subject to whatever kill switch was thrown today within Syria."
According to activists, sudden communication cuts regularly occur before major military offensives.
Amnesty International said on Twitter that the reports of the internet shutdown were "very disturbing."
In early 2011, Egypt's then-president Hosni Mubarak cut his 80 million people off from the web before his regime was toppled by activists.
The shutdown in Egypt was the most comprehensive official electronic blackout of its kind, experts said at the time.
As fighting raged near the airport, Egypt Air and Emirates both suspended services in and out of Syria.
Government forces are reportedly moving to try to keep access roads to the airport from falling under rebel control.
The loss of the international airport would be a symbolic blow for the regime, but not a fatal one.
There are several other military airfields in Damascus still in government hands.

China Bans Vulgar Game Show

Gan Lulu

Chinese regulators suspended a broadcaster Friday after an unaired segment of a TV game show was leaked online showing a raucous shouting match about nudity between spectators and a woman who calls her daughter the next Lady Gaga.
The suspension of all of Jiangsu Education Television's programming - because of content deemed vulgar and not educational enough - marked the government's latest attempt to rein in the increasingly freewheeling media sector.
China also said earlier this year it would limit American-style reality TV and other light fare shown on satellite TV.
The latest ruling was prompted by the game show Bang Bang Bang, which has games of chance for cash prizes as well as entertainment segments with attractive women.
A video clip apparently filmed by an audience member features Gan Lulu, an auto show model well-known in China for racy outfits and whose career was launched by a nude video of her posted online by her publicity-seeking mother.
The six-minute clip of the not-yet-aired game show episode, still available on YouTube, shows Gan as well audience members and the model's mother shouting and swearing after one spectator asks whether Gan's risque images have undermined China's morality.
Gan's mother, Lei Bingxia, also in the audience, stands to take up the argument, using several off-color slurs.
"Can your mum make you the sexy goddess of China?" she later shouts. "Can your mum make billions of people like you? Gan's mum can!"
"I'm the best agent in China, I'm telling you! I will not only make my daughter the world's Lady Gaga, but the world's Marilyn Monroe."
The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television first ordered the show canceled Wednesday and criticised the clip for showing name-calling, "wanton acts" and for "amplifying ugliness." It said the incident had a "negative influence on society."
On Thursday, the agency issued a second directive saying that Jiangsu Education Television, a regional broadcaster near Shanghai, had to suspend all programming effective Friday because it violated China broadcasting rules by identifying itself as an educational channel while offering entertainment content.
The Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said in a faxed statement that some 30 programs were affected by the suspension, including some distance learning programs, meaning classes were canceled for as many as 150,000 students.
The Bang Bang Bang editor also was fired, the Jiangsu provincial government said.
The broadcasting regulator is concerned about vulgar, violent and pornographic videos being aired, and has been tightening rules to make sure that broadcasters and Internet service companies prescreen their content.

American Football Players Using Viagra?

Little blue pill: Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall says he knows NFL players who use Viagra to improve their performance on the field

Football players may have found a use for Viagra outside of the bedroom, according to Chicago Bears' wide receiver Brandon Marshall.
Marshall said he's heard of some players using the sexual stimulant to improve their performance on the field.
'I know guys, it is such a competitive league, guys try anything just to get that edge,' Marshall said during his weekly press conference. 'I’m fortunate enough to be blessed with size and some smarts to give me my edge,' he boasted.
'But some guys, they’ll do whatever they can to get an edge. I’ve heard of some crazy stories. I’ve heard guys using like Viagra, seriously. Because the blood is supposedly thin, some crazy stuff. So, you know, it’s kind of scary with some of these chemicals that are in some of these things so you have to be careful.'
Marshall made the comments as NFL players come under increased scrutiny for using the performance-enhancing drug Adderall, which is prescribed for attention deficit disorder.
Adderall is the latest in a long list of performance-enhancing drugs that professional athletes have been busted for abusing over the last couple decades.
Viagra usage hasn't been a major concern in the NFL, but it might now get a second look after Marshall's comment.

Effects: Researchers have long been studying the effects of Viagra on athletic performance, but studies have been largely inconclusive

Researchers have long been studying the effects of Viagra on athletic performance, but studies have been largely inconclusive.
Some athletes are said to take the drug because it helps to aid the delivery of steroids and oxygen to the muscles, which also aids in hastening recovery from workouts. The drug also counteracts impotence, a major side-effect of steroid usage.
Viagra is a legal drug, but athletes - as well as the rest of the public - cannot legally possess the drug without a prescription.
In May of 2007, the cyclist Andrea Moletta was banned from the Tour of Italy after he was found to be in possession of 82 Viagra pills, as well as syringes concealed in a tube of toothpaste.
IN 2011, Oakland Raiders wide receiver Louis Murphy was arrested and charged with possessing Viagra without a prescription, but there was no indication or evidence that he was using the drug on the field.

Australia's New Plain Packaging Makes Cigarettes Taste Worse

Australia's new plain packaging for cigarettes – which becomes mandatory from Saturday - have been branded "disgusting" by smokers who say they make the cigarettes taste worse.
The new packets, which are blank aside from gruesome health warnings, have been filling shelves for the past two months as part of the toughest anti-tobacco measures in the world.
Despite legal battles and claims of "dirty tricks" by tobacco companies, all cigarettes in Australia must now be sold in drab olive packets featuring macabre images of sick babies, dying cancer sufferers and diseased feet, eyeballs and lungs. Smokers' advice groups have reported being inundated with calls from angry smokers who say their cigarettes now taste "pathetic" and "sickening".
Joe Xia, who owns a busy convenience store just outside Sydney's Chinatown, said the packets are "disgusting" and have been annoying customers who dislike the new warnings.
"People still smoke – now they also complain," he told the Daily Telegraph.
"Nothing will stop them from smoking. But it is hard at night-time. People come from the pub and they see these packets and they get irritated."
The claims that the taste of cigarettes has worsened prompted tobacco firms to deny the product has changed.
A spokesman for Imperial Tobacco Australia, said people who smoked its cigarettes "can be assured that our high quality products will remain the same".
"Packaging has never been identified as the reason people choose or continue to smoke," she said.
The measures, if successful, are tipped to trigger an "olive revolution", with similar laws being considered in Britain, Canada, New Zealand, China, France, India, South Africa, Norway and Uruguay.
But tobacco firms have fought hard to try to combat the changes, including pursuing various legal actions and declaring the new measures will increase the black market.
The Gillard Government has staved off a High Court challenge and accused the firms of using various tricks to try to flout the laws.
The health minister, Tanya Plibersek, said two manufacturers had tried to make the cigarettes appear more "sophisticated" by stamping the paper with watermarks featuring travel destination codes such as AUS, LDN and NYC. The firms have reportedly agreed to remove the watermarking.
Health experts believe the changes will help to save lives and reduce smoking rates. Studies have shown people, particularly youths, are less likely to take up smoking when the packets are not shiny or colourful.
Professor Simon Chapman, from the University of Sydney, said the packets were designed to prevent smoking among future generations who will never have seen "lovely packaging". He has called for further measures, including requiring smokers to be issued with licences which would cost an annual fee and restrict people to 50 cigarettes every two weeks.
But the new packets have confused shopkeepers who can barely find the small writing on the packets to distinguish between different brands.
Othman Moussa, who has run a tobacconist in Sydney's Darling Harbour for 24 years, said he knows the layout of his cigarettes shelf and can still find specific packets. But he says if he takes on new staff "it will be a real mess".
"The main problem for me now is that it is very hard to sort out the deliveries," he told the Daily Telegraph. "It takes three or four hours to read each brand and separate them – it used to take ten minutes."

Dominique Strauss-Kahn To Pay New York Maid $6 million

Dominique Strauss-Kahn to pay New York maid $6 million
Dominique Strauss-Kahn
Dominique Strauss-Kahn has reportedly agreed to pay a $6 million settlement to the New York hotel maid whose accusations of sexual assault ruined his career.
Although the criminal prosecution against the former head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and one-time French presidential contender collapsed last year, Nafissatou Diallo has pursued her allegations against Mr Strauss-Kahn in the civil courts.
Miss Diallo alleged that the 63-year-old forced her to perform oral sex on him while she was cleaning his Manhattan hotel suite in 2011. Mr Strauss-Kahn admitted making the sexual encounter but denied attacking her.
To finance the out-of-court deal, Mr Strauss-Kahn will take out a $3 million bank loan and borrow the rest from his estranged wife, Anne Sinclair, according to Le Monde.

Nafissatou Diallo
Ms Sinclair, an American journalist and millionaire, stood by her husband throughout the scandal and provided bail money after his arrest but the pair finally separated this summer and now live on opposite sides of Paris.
The settlement with Miss Diallo is reportedly due to be confirmed before a New York judge next week but sources close to the case warned that the deal could still fall apart.
"We are moving towards the end of a tragedy," Michele Saban, a friend of Mr Strauss-Kahn's told Reuters in Paris.
If a settlement is reached it will bring a close to the chapter that destroyed the Frenchman's career at the top level of international finance.
However, it will not mark the end of his legal difficulties as he waits to hear whether a French court plans to press ahead with charges of "aggravated pimping".
Prosecutors allege that he was involved in a prostitution ring run out of a luxury hotel in Lille.
Mr Strauss-Kahn admits attending the "libertine" parties but said he did not know the women involved were prostitutes and his lawyers are seeking to have the charges dismissed.
The court's ruling is due on December 19.

Wages Of Sin: Civil Defence Corps Man Dies On Top Of Girl Friend

Officials of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, Calabar, over the weekend monted a manhunt for a lady who allegedly had marathon sex with their colleague, Ofem Eta, during which he died.
A source at 2, Orok Ita Street, Big Qua, where Ofem lived told P.M.NEWS that the man came back from duty on Friday evening and without eating any food went into marathon sex with the girl and passed away during the act.
“He came back from work and told me he was hungry and I prepared food for him but when I got there, his door was shut and when I knocked he told me to take the food back and bring it later. When I took the food to him later, his door was open and when I knocked he did not answer. When I went in I saw him lying naked on his bed,” the source said.
Ofem who hails from Mkapani in Yakkur Local Government Area is alleged to be fond of having sex with girls in most cases on empty stomach.
A neighbour who did not want his name in print said the girl was among the several girls that visit Ofem.
“When she came she greeted us but we did not take particular interest in her and when she came out of his room we did not say anything to her because we did not suspect anything unusual until his town girl brought him food,” the neighbor said.
He said the girl took away Ofem’s phone probably to avoid any trace because she and the deceased night have had some communication before the visit.
“People from his office came here and disturbed the whole street but they could not arrest anybody because the girl went away with his phone,” the neighbour said.
When P.M.NEWS visited the Corps’ office, the Public Relations Officer, Mrs Nkoyo Bassey said: “The man was enjoying himself so that is strictly his personal responsibility and not the Corps’. Have a good day”.
A source at the Operation’s unit of the Corps where Ofem worked before his death said there are efforts to track down the lady “but for now we have not arrested anybody”.

Chinese Killed In Lagos, Wife Shot

Gunmen shot and killed a Chinese businessman at Ogudu area of Lagos on Wednesday night, Nigerian Police spokesperson said.
Two other Chinese women sustained head and leg injuries during the incident, said Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide.
Police said four Chinese in a car were coming from a function at Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, when a red car followed and overtook them as they were about entering Chinatown at Ogudu.
“They shot the man at close range and collected his bag. He was rushed to Gbagada General Hospital where he died,” Braide said.
She said although investigation is ongoing, the police suspect murder.
“We are suspecting murder,” she said.
Braid said the corpse of the Chinese has been deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, Ikeja, while the two women are responding to treatment.
Sources said that the woman who sustained head injury was the deceased’s wife.
It was learnt that the incident happened at about 9.30 p.m.
Sources said the deceased was a businessman and dealt in air travel business.
Sources said many Chinese citizens invaded the hospital after they learnt about the incident.
The identities of the victims were not available at press time.
It was the fifth Chinese death in the hands of gunmen in Nigeria in the last two months and the first in the Lagos area.
On 19 October, a Chinese construction worker was killed in Maiduguri, Borno state, less than a week after a Chinese chef was also killed in the same area.
This month, 2 Chinese construction workers were killed in Benisheikh, another town in Borno state, in Nigeria’s Northwest.
In recent times, Chinese nationals have increasingly become victims of violent attacks.

Teenager Stabbed His Mum 94 Times Then Blamed It On Mystery Drugs Gang

A boy of 16 murdered his mother by knifing her 94 times in an attack that first immobilised her by cutting her spinal cord, a court heard yesterday.
Then he claimed Leah Whittle was killed by a gang of “mystery men from Yorkshire”.
A jury heard the youth stabbed her in the head, back and front during an onslaught so sudden she had “little chance” to defend herself in the two-bed flat they shared.
He then climbed out of his first-floor window and down a drainpipe in the early hours and went to visit friends – giving them an elaborate cover story about the mystery killers, Winchester crown court was told.
The teenager – who admits “an interest in knives” – claimed he had watched through a bathroom door as they knifed her to death, said prosecutor Richard Smith.
The divorced mum-of-three, 42, was found slumped in her hallway in Weymouth, Dorset.
Mr Smith added: “At some stage, he told his pals as he described his ‘escape’, the killers tried to knife him.”
He said the boy’s friends did not call the police or an ambulance.
The youth, now 17 and who cannot be named for legal reasons, denies murder between July 19 and 21.
He wore a silver tracksuit as he heard his mum’s last moments relived in court.
Mr Smith said Ms Whittle was “immobilised” early on in the horrific killing by her own son.
A postmortem examination of her blood-stained body revealed that her spinal cord had been severed by a blade.
There were no injuries to her arms or hands – suggesting she was rendered unconscious early in the attack.
The prosecutor said that earlier on the night of the killing the boy spoke by phone to one of his all-girl group of pals and said his mum had “days to live” as she was set to be executed.
Mr Smith claimed he told the friend that his brother had got himself into trouble over a drug debt and that people were on their way to kill their mother.
He said: “The friend was left with the impression the mother’s life was at immediate risk.”
His pal, who also cannot be named, could hear Ms Whittle in the background bringing the boy a drink.
Mr Smith added: “It may be that in the course of that night he’d become angry at something his mother had said or done.
“He himself says he has a temper. Perhaps that and his interest in knives came together.”
The court heard the youth later turned up at his friend’s house with his mum’s blood on his face and his socks.
The court heard the boy told three friends that cuts on his hands were from climbing down the drainpipe to escape.
Traces of his blood were found inside the flat, the court heard.
The murder weapon has never been recovered.
The trial continues.

Texas Seeks Control Of Polygamist Sect Leader Warren Jeffs' Ranch

Warren Jeffs (Pic:AP)
Warren Jeffs
Texas wants ownership of Warren Jeffs' massive ranch where prosecutors say the convicted polygamist sect leader and his followers sexually assaulted dozens of children, the state attorney general's office said Wednesday.
A judge will determine whether to grant the state control of the nearly 1,700-acre property owned by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. According to local tax records, the total value of the land is appraised at more than $33 million.
Seeking to bolster their case for seizures, prosecutors also allege that FLDS leaders financed the property through money laundering. The sect bought the land for about $1.1 million in 2003, according to an affidavit filed Wednesday.
Starting with a raid on the secluded Schleicher County ranch in April 2008, the state spent more than $4.5 million racking up swift convictions against Jeffs and 10 of his followers. Jerry Strickland, a spokesman for the attorney general's office, said the warrant begins the final chapter in the state's five-year-old investigation into the sect.
Texas Rangers raided the ranch following a call to a domestic abuse hotline that turned out to be false, and took 439 children into state custody. Jeffs last year was convicted of sexually assaulting two minors whom he described as his spiritual wives. At trial, prosecutors presented DNA evidence to show he fathered a child with one of those girls, aged 15.
Jeffs, 56, is serving a life prison term in Texas. He has continued to try to lead his roughly 10,000 followers from behind bars. The sect is a radical offshoot of mainstream Mormonism whose members believe polygamy brings exaltation in heaven.
Rod Parker, a Nevada attorney for the FLDS, did not immediately return a phone message from The Associated Press. He told the Salt Lake Tribune that it seemed the state's purpose was to take the land and sell it to the highest bidder, which would result in sect members living at the ranch likely being evicted.
It's not known how many people still live at the secluded ranch located about 321km west of San Antonio, but the seizure warrant does not require them to leave. The property is so far off the main roads that only helicopters or planes can provide a true glimpse of the ranch.
Schleicher County Sheriff David Doran said the population at the ranch has "reduced quite a bit over the last several months'' since Jeffs was convicted. Whereas the property was once under a constant state of construction - the FLDS even had its own cement plant - Dolan said he believes only a small contingent of members are still there keeping the ranch working.
Doran said his deputies accompanied state investigators to deliver the warrant at the ranch. No one answered, so Doran said they taped the warrant to the ranch's front gate.

Strickland, the attorney general's spokesman, said it was too early to speculate about what the state would do with the property if given ownership. The group will have a chance to contest any seizure.
According to the state's affidavit, the ranch is controlled under the name the United Order of Texas, which is described in county filings as a "religious trust created to preserve and advance the religious doctrines and goals of the FLDS.''
Online records from the Schleicher County Appraisal District indicate a dozen pieces of property at the ranch's address that are owned by the trust and total 1,691 acres. Combined, the most recent appraised value of the properties is $33.4 million.
Jeffs' most devoted followers consider him God's spokesman on earth and a prophet, but they were absent from court for the bulk of his criminal trial.
Paving the way to Jeffs' conviction were his own "priesthood records'' - diary-like volumes, covering tens of thousands of pages, in which Jeffs recounts his sexual encounters and records even his most mundane daily activities.
Prosecutors cite the records in the 91-page affidavit filed Wednesday.
"This will be a major gathering place of the saints that are driven,'' Jeffs wrote. "You can see it is well isolated. In looking at this location, we can raise crops all year round. There is no building code requirements. We can build as we wish without inspectors coming in. There is a herd of animals that the storehouse needs, that we can nourish and increase.''
In the affidavit, prosecutors allege that sect members illegally structured financial transactions and that Jeffs personally toured the ranch before the land was purchased.

Assange Has Chronic Lung Infection; Still Holed Up In Ecuadorian Embassy

Julian Assange

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has developed a chronic lung infection and requires constant medical attention at his refuge in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London.
Ecuador's ambassador to Britain Ana Alban made the comment to reporters in the Ecuadorean capital of Quito on Wednesday without offering further details.
Assange took refuge in Ecuador's London embassy on June 19 after unsuccessfully fighting extradition from Britain to Sweden for questioning on sexual assault charges filed by two women. Ecuador later granted him asylum.
Alban says Ecuador is covering the Australian's medical costs and continues to seek his safe passage out of Britain. British authorities have refused.
Assange gained fame for publishing online the biggest trove ever of sensitive documents, US diplomatic cables and military files from the US and Afghan wars.

FEC approves N2.2bn Banquet hall For Presidential Villa

The Federal Executive Council, yesterday, approved the construction of a new banquet hall in the Presidential Villa for the sum of N2.2 billion.
The approval is part of the final set of N19.4 billion contracts for this year covering road construction, rail transportation and infrastructural development in the Federal Capital Territory.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, who briefed State House correspondents after the meeting, said the new banquet hall would have a capacity of 150 seats.
He said subsequent Federal Executive Council meetings would be devoted to reviewing what had been achieved by government in the last one year.
Dr Abati, who stood in for the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, said aside from the roads, rail and other contracts, the council also approved the award of contract for the conduct of fiscal allocation and statutory disbursement audit for 2007 to 2011 as well as oil and gas industry audit.
He said the approval was in conformity with section 2 of the NEITI Act 2007.
He said: “The objective of this initiative is to ensure transparency and accountability in the application of resources from payments received from extractive industries and to further ensure that all fiscal allocations and statutory disbursements due from the Federal Government to statutory recipients were dully made.”
Abati noted that the essence of the contract was to enable NEITI track extractive industry sector funds paid into the federation account as distributed and received by federal, state and local government areas.
He said there would also be special emphasis on the application, utilization of the funds, on beneficiaries of the 13 per cent derivation and relevant federal institutions that directly received allocations from the Federation Account.

2 Banks Terminally Sick – NDIC

Two undisclosed banks have been said to be terminally ill, as they had negative capital adequacy ratio in 2011.
This is just as deposit money banks in the country lost N4.071 billion in 2011 to frauds and forgeries.
These were contained in the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) annual report released on Wednesday, in Lagos.
However, the amount lost by banks to fraud decreased by 65 per cent, when compared with N11.68 billion recorded in 2010.
Breakdown of the report showed that the year under review witnessed a rise in fraud cases, from 1,532 cases worth N21.29 billion recorded in 2010 to a total of 2,352 fraud cases involving the sum of N28.40 billion in 2011.
The amount of frauds and forgeries also increased by 33.40 per cent, while the number of attempt for frauds increased by 53.5 per cent.
The report, however, attributed the increase in the number of attempted or successful frauds and forgeries cases reported in 2011 to rising fraud cases through internet banking and suppression of customer deposit. Meanwhile, the capital adequacy ratio of the banks improved significantly from 4.06 per cent in 2010 to 17.71 in December 2011.

Jamie Foxx Calling Obama 'Lord And Savior' Blasphemy

Jamie Foxx, the prominent American stand-up comedian, has requested the Christian religious activists of his nation to take it easy after the activists were enraged over the comments of Jamie Foxx at the Soul Train Awards show, which labelled Barack Obama, the newly elected US President, as America’s ‘Lord and Saviour.’
Jamie Foxx, the Academy Award winner for his role of Ray Charles in the film, ‘Ray’, has remarked that the Christian religious campaigners shouldn’t take a comedian’s observations so seriously. His declaration on Barack Obama was made in jest, expressed Foxx.
Jamie Foxx, who is also a singer-songwriter with successful albums like Intuition and Unpredictable to his credit, has voiced to the US news show, Entertainment Tonight, that the sociopolitical and religious activists blow out of proportion comments of a comedian for their ideological purposes. A comedian’s task is becoming difficult.
The Jamie Foxx comment on Obama has irked Christian religious organisations like Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights (CLRCR), with its President William Donohue proclaiming sarcastically that Jamie Foxx’s epiphany is shocking. William Donohue has expressed that, even though President Barack Obama couldn’t prevent the ‘oceans from rising’ as Obama vowed to do in 2008, Obama has convinced Jamie Foxx that God exists.
CLRCR President has released a declaration, which refers to a 2011 ‘red carpet’ interview, in which Jamie Foxx had uttered that he didn’t know what God meant to him.
The Jamie Foxx remark on Obama was televised in the US on November 25 but was recorded in Las Vegas on November 12, some days after Obama’s reelection to the White House.
The Biblical title, ‘Our Lord and Saviour’, employed by Jamie Foxx for Obama, has been blasted by conservative blogs like Newsbusters.
Fox News commentator, Mary Walter, has remarked that the ‘Django Unchained’ actor’s comments may be rooted in dependence on government. Walter mentioned to Fox News that the arrogant liberals vilify the conservatives as ‘less evolved’ because conservatives love their religion and guns. If the government provides one with everything, the government becomes a societal religion, killing the ‘church religion’, voiced Mary Walter.

Bobbi Kristina Brown In Crash That Sent Car Off The Road

Bobbi Kristina Brown, daughter of the late Whitney Houston, was cited by police after being involved in a car accident Wednesday in which the vehicle left the road and traveled down an embankment.
Police in the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta confirmed to ET that a passerby called 911 just before noon to report that the black Chevrolet Camaro had veered off the road and traveled through a wooded area, striking trees before eventually coming to a stop.

"The investigation revealed the driver lost control and the vehicle left Beaver Creek Road on the east side and traveled down an embankment," a police statement said. Damage to the vehicle was described in the statement as "moderate."
Upon the initial arrival, officers say they found Bobbi Christina standing beside the vehicle and she was uninjured. "Our officer completed an official accident report and issued a traffic citation to Ms. Brown for the offense of failure to maintain lane," the police statement said.

Mom Convicted Of Killing Her Two Kids Gets Two Life Terms In Prison

Guilty: A jury found Kelli Murphy, 42, guilty of murdering her two children last year

A Colorado mother has been convicted of murdering her two young children because she was distraught over her impending divorce.
Kelli Murphy, 42, of Castle Rock, was sentenced to two terms of life without parole as family members wept in the courthouse for six-year-old, Madigan, and nine-year-old, Liam, who she smothered to death in May 2011.
On what would have been Liam's 11th birthday, jurors were shown photographs of the children's bodies laying face down on their beds.
Dramatically, district Attorney Jay Williford described the amount of time and planning it would have required to kill each child, according to The Denver Post.
Pictures of the children's locked bedroom doors came on a projector as Mr Williford paused and watched the clock.
'Liam is now unconscious,' he said after about 30 seconds. 'Liam is now dead,' he added a minute-and-a-half later.
Friends and family sobbed for the children as Mr Williford explained how the mother had to tuck Liam in and make his bed before unlocking her daughter's door and repeating the process.
Throughout the trial, prosecutors claimed that Ms Murphy killed the children and then tried to commit suicide because she was distraught over her divorce from her husband, Robert Eric Murphy.
Prosecutor Chris Gallo described the mother as a controlling, angry, calculating woman who didn't want to share custody of the kids, according to The Denver Post.
Murdered: Six-year-old Madigan Murphy, left, and her brother Liam, 9, right, were found dead in their bedrooms in May 2011Murdered: Six-year-old Madigan Murphy, left, and her brother Liam, 9, right, were found dead in their bedrooms in May 2011

'This is a woman bent on control,' Mr Gallo said. 'Controlling her kids, her husband and her divorce ... It was Kelli's way or no way.'
He said Ms Murphy told her husband: 'I want 100 per cent custody of the kids and 100 per cent of your salary. I'm going to make your life hell.'
But Ms Murphy's defense attorney argued the deaths were accidental, occurring after she blacked out from drinking a full bottle of vodka and taking too many pills.
Her attorney, Ara Ohanion, said her plan was to kill herself but make it look like she just fell asleep so as not to frighten her children.
But when she woke up she found her children face down on their beds dead and couldn't remember what happened, so she cut her wrists in a bid to end her life.
'No mother who loved her children the way Kelli did would do this intentionally or knowingly,' Mr Ohanion told jurors today, adding that the woman's behaviour had become increasingly erratic in the lead up to the murders.
He said Ms Murphy felt abandoned and rejected by her family because of the divorce and was acting unstable and paranoid.
On May 23 2011, Ms Murphy called 911 saying she was about to commit suicide. At that point, the kids had been dead for 12 hours already.
The dispatcher allegedly asked her if there were any children at home and she allegedly replied: 'They are in heaven.'
When the police arrived at her home they found the two children dead in their bedrooms. Both of the children went to Rock Ridge Elementary School. According to Castle Rock Police Chief Tony Lane, the bodies had no visible signs of injury.
In court today, the jury listened to Ms Murphy tell the dispatcher on the call that she 'hurt her two young children.'
Life: Kelli Murphy, pictured in court, was handed two life sentences for the killings

When the operator asked her what happened, Ms Murphy said: 'I have to have an attorney.'
Mr Gallo said this proved beyond reasonable doubt that Ms Murphy was sober and conscious enough to know that she would need a lawyer to defend what she had done.
But Mr Ohanian claimed that requesting legal representation proved she didn't know what happened.
'She asked the EMT to kill her on the way to the hospital — she was not in her right mind,' he said.
Jurors found her guilty of two counts of first-degree murder after deliberation and two counts of first-degree murder of a victim under 12-years-old.

PDP Gets New BOT Chairman Today

Barring any last minute change, a new chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will emerge today, several months after former President Olusegun Obasanjo voluntarily resigned from the position.

There is outrage in Okesa area of Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, following allegations that an 85-year old man, Pa Samuel Oladipupo, allegedly raped a 12-year old girl identified simply as Esther.
Oladipupo, who is now being detained by the Ekiti State police command at the command headquarters in Ado Ekiti, told newsmen in Ado Ekiti, on Tuesday, that he did not rape the girl, but that he attempted to have sex with her with her consent after he was seduced.
According to the octogenarian, he sent the JSS 1 student to buy recharge card for him, adding that she had helped him to enter the credit digits into his mobile handset at his home, and left.
He claimed further that “she came back and said she came to tell me that she was hungry.”
After a meal of bread and stew, Oladipupo claimed further, “She relaxed in the upholstery chair and took off all her dresses.”
As a man, I began to lose control. But I’ve collected that it could be a plan to frame me an d I quickly stood up. So, I didn’t enter her.”
But the girl countered Pa Oladipupo’s statement, saying she did not seduce him but that it was the man that grabbed her.
According to her, she had gone to mend her school sandal when Pa Oladipupo she had earlier helped to buy a recharge card, called her and accused her of stealing his mobile handset.
“When I told him I didn’t steal his phone, he then asked me to accompany him to his sitting room where we found the phone on the television and he apologised. As I made to go, Baba grabbed me and pushed me onto the couch and forcefully had sex with me. The loud noise I made attracted one woman who came to my rescue and took me to my mother.”
The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Mr. Victor Olu Babayemi, said the alleged crime was committed on Sunday at No. 9, Barracks Road in Okesa, Ado Ekiti, adding that the girl had been taken to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado Ekiti, for necessary tests.
Babayemi said preliminary investigations conducted y the police confirmed that the old man is a serial rapist, adding that the accused person would be charged to court as soon as the test results were received.
The Ekiti Police spokesperson also hinted that the matter had been reported to the Ekiti State Gender-Based Violence Prohibition Committee for immediate rehabilitation of the victim.

Switzerland Is The Best Place To Be Born In The World...Nigeria Is Worst

Switzerland is the best place to be born in the world in 2013 - and Britain is just 27th - behind South Korea, the US and Israel, new research shows.
People born in Switzerland will tend to be the happiest and have the best quality of life judged in terms of wealth, health and trust in public institutions.
Nigeria has the unenviable title of being the worst country for a baby to enter the world in 2013.
The Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark also all make the top five in a 'quality-of-life' index highlighting where it is best to be born next year.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a sister company of The Economist, attempts to measure which country will provide the best opportunities for a healthy, safe and prosperous life in years to come.
Their index links the results of subjective life-satisfaction surveys - how happy people say they are - to objective determinants of quality of life across countries.
One of the most important factors is being rich, but other factors come into play - including crime, trust in public institutions and the health of family life.
In total, the index takes into account 11 indicators.
These include fixed factors such as geography, others that change slowly over time such as demography, social and cultural characteristics, and the state of the world economy.
The index also looks at income per head in 2030, which is roughly when children born in 2013 will reach adulthood.
Small economies dominate the top 10 countries, with Australia coming second and New Zealand and the Netherlands not too far behind.
Half of the top 10 countries are European, but only one, the Netherlands, is from the euro-zone.
The crisis-ridden south of Europe, including Greece, Portugal and Spain, lags behind despite the advantage of a favourable climate.Interestingly, the largest European economies - Germany, France and Britain - do not do particularly well.
Despite their economic dynamism, none of the BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China - score impressively.
In 1988 America came top of a rank of 50 countries according to where it would be best to be born in the world.
Do you agree?

France To Open World’s First Mosque For The gay Community

Mohammed Ludovic Lütfi Zahed, an Algerian Muslim living in France who is married to his gay partner, hopes to open a mosque for homosexuals

A French-Algerian homosexual man is planning to open a 'mosque for gays' in France and hopes to eventually conduct same-sex Muslim marriages.
Mohammed Ludovic Lütfi Zahed, an Algerian Muslim living in Paris who is married to his gay partner, hopes to open the doors by the end of the month, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Mr Zahed says the mosque, situated in a Buddhist chapel in Paris, will also break another Islamic taboo by refusing to segregate women and men.
He said: 'In normal mosques, women have to sit in the back seats and wear a headscarf and gay men are afraid of both verbal and physical aggression.
'After performing the Hajj, I realized that a mosque for gays was a must for gay Muslims who want to perform their prayers.'
Zahed is married to Qiyam al-Din, a South African man. The pair wed in South Africa, where same-sex marriage is legal, and their marriage was approved by an imam in France, but was not recognised by the previous government.
Gay marriage has bitterly divided France.
French President Francois Hollande said he would enact his ‘marriage for everyone plan’ within a year of coming to power in May, but vocal opposition from religious leaders, some politicians and parts of rural France has sparked protests with an estimated 70,000 marchers.
Riot police have been forced to use tear gas to break up violence between those who support and oppose the change in law.

Protests: There were bitter clashes between demonstrators after France's Socialist government adopted a draft law to authorise gay marriage and adoption
Protests: There were bitter clashes between demonstrators after France's Socialist government adopted a draft law to authorise gay marriage and adoption
As well as opposition from those against gay marriage, the couple will likely face persecution from the French Muslim community. Homosexuality is a religious, political and cultural flashpoint among much of the Arab and Islamic world.
Mr Zahed told Al Arabiya News: 'Being married in front of my family, was like a new start of life for me.
'I could have never imagined such a day would come, seeing the joy in my parents’ eyes after they had battled with my sexuality and tried with all their might to change the course of my sexual orientation.'
Zahed was diagnosed with AIDS at 19, sparking his spiritual awakening. He says he regularly receives hate mail from Muslims globally, but added he is 'comfortable' in his own skin
He added that if his marriage is not recognised in France he will return to South Africa.

India's Poster Boy For Vegetarianism – He's Just Fathered A Child At 96

The world's oldest father has been recruited by activists in India who maintain lifelong vegetarians retain their "vigour" better than others.
Ramajit Raghav, who shot to celebrity two years ago at the age of 94 when he first became a father, features in a new campaign by for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) India.
A photograph of Mr Raghav, who recently fathered his second child, Ranjit, at the age of 96, shows him cradling the baby with the headline "Vegetarians Still Got It at Age 96".
"I have been a vegetarian all my life, and I credit my stamina and virility to my diet," said the elderly father from the state of Haryana. "Being a vegetarian is the secret to my strength and good health."
Peta claims living a vegetarian life makes perfect sense and that India is increasingly seeing problems associated with heart disease, cancer and diabetes, which it says are associated with a meat-eating diet.

"And since each vegetarian saves the lives of more than 100 animals a year, their consciences are lighter, too," it said. "Viagra and other anti-impotence drugs may get you through the night, but a vegetarian diet can get you through your life. Numerous physicians agree that the best way to prevent artery blockage and other conditions that cause impotence is to eat a diet high in fibre, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains."
When he was interviewed last month by The Times of India, Mr Raghav revealed he had been a bachelor until meeting his wife, Shakuntala Devi, ten years ago.
He has been a strict vegetarian and has never drank alcohol. Instead, his diet is made up of fresh milk, clarified butter, vegetables and chapattis.
"I wake up at five in the morning and go to bed before 8pm. During the day, I work in the fields and also take an afternoon nap," he said.

Supergrass Who Held Key To Huge Russian Fraud Is Found Dead...He's The FOURTH Person Linked To Multi-Million Pound Tax Fraud To Die Mysteriously

Murky underworld: Alexander Perepilichnyy, 44, collapsed in his cul-de-sac after helping prosecutors investigate corrupt Russian tax officials
Alexander Perepilichnyy, 44, collapsed in his cul-de-sac after helping prosecutors investigate corrupt Russian tax officials
A Russian supergrass who was helping Swiss prosecutors uncover a multi-million pound money laundering scheme used by corrupt Russian officials has died in mysterious circumstances outside his Surrey home, The Independent can reveal.
Alexander Perepilichnyy, a wealthy businessman who sought sanctuary in Britain three years ago after falling out with a powerful crime syndicate, collapsed outside his mansion on a luxury private estate on the outskirts of Weybridge. He was 44-years-old and was in seemingly good health.
The Independent has learned that Mr Perepilichnyy was a key witness against the “Klyuev Group”, an opaque network of corrupt Russian officials and underworld figures implicated in a series of multi-million pound tax frauds and the death in custody of the whistle-blowing Moscow lawyer Sergei Magnitsky. He is the fourth person to be linked to the scandal who has died suddenly.
Surrey Police said that a post mortem examination of Mr Perepilichnyy had proved “inconclusive” and further tests were being carried out to try to establish a cause of death. The force said the sudden death was not being treated as suspicious but left open the possibility that it will have to carry out further investigations.
Officers were called to his home on a cul-de-sac shared with seven multi-million pound properties shortly after 5pm on a Saturday two weeks ago but the Russian was declared dead at the scene 30 minutes later. Surrey Police would not confirm suggestions that the Russian had been out running.

Evidence provided by Mr Perepilichnyy detailed how a number of tax officials from Moscow became obscenely wealthy in the immediate aftermath of a tax fraud against a British investment fund and used Swiss based bank accounts to purchase luxury properties in Dubai and Montenegro.
Earlier this year Swiss prosecutors opened an investigation into a number of accounts at Credit Suisse after Hermitage Capital Management forwarded them a dossier of evidence implicating the Russian officials.
“Perepilichnyy was the guy who brought all the evidence they needed to open the investigation,” said a source with knowledge of the investigation. “He brought with him records of shell companies, Credit Suisse accounts, property transactions. The whole lot.”

Hermitage Capital was once one of the largest foreign investors inside Russia until it became the victim of a $230m (£144m) tax fraud scheme. Corrupt officials from Russia's powerful Interior Ministry conspired with tax officers to steal corporate seals from Hermitage Capital following a police raid and apply for a series of tax rebates using those seals. Complicit courts and tax offices signed off on the deal and the money was transferred into a bank which was liquidated shortly afterwards.
Hermitage hired the Moscow lawyer Sergei Magnitsky to investigate the scam and he publicly named a number of key Interior Ministry officials who he believed were involved. Days after going public he was arrested by the same men he had accused and was held in prison for a year. He died in November 2009 after being refused vital medication following months of increasingly brutal treatment.
Thanks to tireless campaigning by Bill Browder, the British based CEO of Hermitage Capital, the case has become a major source of embarrassment for Russia and a lightning rod for anger over the precarious nature of international investments in a country where official corruption has become endemic.
Moves have been brought in the EU and United States to place members of the Klyuev Group on visa travel ban lists whilst Senator John McCain has even called on the White House to proscribe the organisation using new powers to curb international crime syndicates.
Russia’s Interior Ministry claims the complex scam was carried out by a sawmill worker and a convicted burglar, both of whom are serving five year sentences, in cahoots with three others who have since died. One died of a heart attack before the crime took place, another was found dead in Ukraine and the third plunged from a balcony to his death.

Hermitage's initial investigation concentrated on the Interior Ministry officials implicated directly in Sergei Magnitsky's death. But in recent months they have published a series of exposes on the new found wealth of a number of tax officials who signed off on the fraudulent tax rebate.
At the time, Hermitage reported that a Russian businessman who had turned on his former colleagues was helping them uncover what had happened to their money.
The British hedge fund declined to comment on Mr Perepilichnyy's death. But a source with knowledge of the investigation in Switzerland confirmed that he had been providing Swiss prosecutors and Hermitage Capital with evidence on the corrupt tax officials.
Today the Swiss Attorney General’s office confirmed to The Independent that Mr Perepilichnyy had given evidence to federal prosecutor Maria Antonella-Bino. Asked whether his death would have a detrimental impact on the investigation the spokeswoman replied: “Our strength resides in our ability to minimise the influence of such a regretful event on our investigation.”
Surrey Police said the investigation into Mr Perepilichnyy’s death had been passed to the coroner ahead of an inquest. A spokeswoman said: “It was a sudden death and a post mortem examination was carried out which was inconclusive and an inquest will now be held… Further tests are being carried out but the investigation has been handed over to the coroner, subject to anything being found that requires further police investigation.”

10 Killed At Beer Parlour In Jos

alt

Following the gruesome killing of eight people at a beer parlour in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday night, the death toll from the incident has increased to 10, while women in the local government area trooped out on Tuesday to protest the killing.
Even as the people in the area have alleged that the act was perpetuated by some men in uniform in a Toyota Hilux van belonging to the Special Task Force in charge of security in the state, the STF has, however, denied involvement of his men.
According to a statement issued by the Special Task Force, signed by its Media Officer, Captain Salisu Mustapha which was made available to Nigerian Tribune in Jos, the attack took place at about 8.30 p.m. on Monday when some unknown gunmen stormed a beer parlour christened “S.K Beer Parlour” at Hiepang in Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area of the state.
According to the statement, the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately on customers and killed eight people on the spot, while two others later died at the hospital as a result of gunshot wounds.
Miffed by the incident, inhabitants of the local government, mostly women trooped out on Tuesday to protest the attack, alleging that those who carried out the act were in military uniform and came in a Hilux van belonging to the Special Task Force.
A cross section of the protesters who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune alleged that one of those who carried out the killings was apprehended and is now receiving treatment at the Plateau State Specialist Hospital.

When Nigerian Tribune called at the Specialist Hospital, there was a pandemonium when those who thronged the hospital to catch a glimpse of the arrested culprit confronted some policemen who came to ascertain if the man was actually one of them.
Responding to the allegation that those who carried out the act came in a Hilux van belonging to the STF, the Media officer of the Force, Captain Salisu Mustapha, denied the involvement of the STF in the killing, adding that none of his men was involved “in such uncivilised act.”
Meanwhile, the chairman, Management Committee of Barkin Ladi Local Government Council, Honourable Emmanuel Loma, has called on the Chief of Defence Staff to investigate alleged involvement of men of the Special Task Force in killings around the council area.
Speaking with newsmen over the latest killings in the area, the chairman said those within the vicinity of the attack confirmed that some people in a Hilux van carried out the killing.
According to him, in the process, one Corporal Salisu Gidado, a mobile policeman attached to the Special Task Force who wore the same jalabiya dress with the attackers was identified by survivors.
