California bans controversial 'gay therapy'

California has become the first state in America to ban controversial therapy which aims to reverse homosexuality in children.
Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill on Sunday which prohibited people under the age of 18 from undergoing sexual orientation change therapy.
The move marks a major victory for gay rights advocates who say the therapy, also called reparative therapy, has no medical basis because homosexuality is not a disorder.
The bill had support from the American Psychiatric Association, California Psychological Association and the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, among others.
Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin said: "LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) youth will now be protected from a practice that has not only been debunked as junk science, but has been proven to have drastically negative effects on their well-being."
He urged other states to follow California's lead.
State Senator Ted Lieu, the bill's sponsor, said in a statement that Mr Brown had signed the bill.
Mr Lieu said the psychiatrist who pioneered the therapy, Dr Robert Spitzer, has since renounced it and has apologised to the gay and lesbian community.
Opponents said the bill encroached on the rights of parents to make choices for their children. They also said politicians should not regulate what they considered to be a matter for medical boards to decide.
The bill will come into effect on January 1.

Rick Ross, Young Jeezy involved in brawl at BET Hip Hop Awards

Rick Ross and Young Jeezy have been involved in a fight backstage at the BET Hip Hop Awards, reports TMZ.
The rappers are said to have "started pushing and shoving each other" in the parking lot at the venue last night (September 29) before bodyguards and security stepped in and the police were called.
DJ and MTV host Funkmaster Flex - who also attended the awards - first broke news of the scuffle online.
"Jeezy and Rick Ross just had words backstage!! Pushing and shoving!!!" he tweeted.
"Beef just spread to the parking lot!!!" he added minutes later, before suggesting that a firearm may have been involved.
"Shortly after 7:15 pm Saturday, a fight broke out in the parking lot at the Atlanta Civic Centre between two groups," confirmed a spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department.
"Officers on scene responded to break up the fight and used OC spray in the process. Individuals fled the scene. There were no arrests or reports of serious injuries. Reports of shots fired appear to be untrue."
The feud between Rick Ross - who recently played a show at London's Wembley Arena - and Young Jeezy dates back to August 2010, when Jeezy released the track 'Death B4 Dishonor'. The song contains lines that were supposedly 'disses' directed toward Ross, including comments about the rapper's Black Mafia Family crew credentials.
Jeezy went on to deny reports that the track referenced Ross, telling MTV News: "It's not a diss... I think sometimes people can read into things too deep. They trippin', man... Basically, if homie takes that as a diss, he's insecure."
MTV News reports that Ross's protégé Gunplay was also involved in a fight with members of 50 Cent's G-Unit. Both scuffles are alleged to have taken place while A Tribe Called Quest, Missy Elliott and Busta Rhymes paid tribute to fallen music mogul Chris Lighty.
Police have yet to release the names of those involved in either altercation.

Justin Bieber vomits on stage during concert

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber was forced to apologise to fans after vomiting on stage last night (September 29).
The singer - who was performing in Glendale, Arizona on the first stop of his 'Believe' tour - had to stop part-way through album track 'Out of Town Girl' to turn away from the crowd and be sick.
18-year-old Bieber ran off stage as dancers and a DJ continued to perform, before re-emerging and apologising to the audience.
"I'm sorry, I'm going to slow things down," he said before singing ballad 'Fall' with acoustic guitar accompaniment.
Bieber managed to complete Karate Kid theme song 'Never Say Never' and made it a few bars into his Nicki Minaj duet 'Beauty and a Beat' before having to exit the stage again.
"It's hard for me, you know, not feeling great and throwing up in front of a bunch of people," he told fans when he returned. "Will you love me even though I'm throwing up on stage?
"I wanted to give you my best show ever so do you mind if I finish it?"
After the concert ended, the star took to Twitter to address what had happened.
"Great show. Getting better for tomorrow's show !!!! Love u," he posted, along with a picture of himself lying in bed.
He then wrote, "and.... Milk was a bad choice! Lol", suggesting that dairy in combination with energetic dance routines was to blame for his illness.
Bieber went on to pay tribute to a young fan who lost her battle with cancer last week.
"Goodnight Avalanna," he added. "Tonight was for u. I love u."

Schwarzenegger admits affair with Brigitte Nielsen

Arnold Schwarzenegger is confirming that he had a "hot affair" with actress Brigitte Nielsen at a time he and Maria Shriver were dating and already living together.
Schwarzenegger and Nielsen co-starred in the 1985 film "Red Sonja." Nielsen write in a memoir published last year that she and Schwarzenegger had an "outrageous affair" while making the movie and that she did know until later that he was involved with Shriver.
In his memoir "Total Recall," coming out Monday, Schwarzenegger writes that he and Nielsen did indeed have a "hot affair," but he knew it wouldn't last. In fact, their "fling" only made him realize that he wanted to marry Shriver.
Nielsen would soon marry Schwarzenegger's fellow action star, Sylvester Stallone.
Arnold Schwarzenegger says his wife, Maria Shriver, was told to "snap out of it" by her mother for her attempts to persuade him against running for California governor in 2003, a conversation that ultimately opened the door to his successful candidacy.
Eunice Shriver told her daughter that her husband would be "angry for the rest of his life" if she stopped his ambitions, Schwarzenegger writes in his new autobiography, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story."
The former governor says in the book that he had decided against running to recall Gov. Gray Davis after his wife implored him not to for the sake of their family. Maria Shriver announced his decision to their four children.
But he writes that when Maria Shriver told her mother about her efforts to thwart Schwarzenegger's political ambitions, Eunice told her daughter that women in their family "always support the men when they want to do something." Schwarzenegger says he didn't know about the conversation at the time, but learned of it later.
Maria Shriver then softened her stance, paving the way for Schwarzenegger to announce his candidacy on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," where he says he felt most comfortable.
The announcement came after a week of wavering. Schwarzenegger says before he headed to the TV appearance, his wife handed him two pieces of paper with talking points she had written: one in case he decided to run, another in case he decided not to.
He writes that Shriver went on to become a key ally and adviser to his campaign and eventual governorship.
Schwarzenegger has often said that Maria's mother and her father, Sargent Shriver, were essential to his eventual decision to seek public office, and the most "extraordinary human beings I've ever met." But he also writes in the book that he often teased his wife that the close-knit Democratic Kennedy clan was "like a bunch of clones" because there was such conformity among them.
A spokesman for Shriver, Matthew DiGirolamo, declined to comment on the contents of the book.
"Total Recall" will officially be published next week. The Associated Press purchased an early copy.
The book is part of an effort by the onetime "Mr. Universe" and Hollywood action star to rebrand himself after leaving office with a mixed record and subsequent embarrassing revelations about a fling he had with the family's housekeeper. Schwarzenegger, who fathered a son with the housekeeper, says he also let the boy down.
Schwarzenegger, 65, said he avoided telling his wife for years about the boy, who is now a teenager, even when Shriver asked him, partly because of his longtime penchant for secrecy, and his fear that the news would become public and undermine his political career. He told his wife in January 2011, when she confronted him the day after he left office.
In an interview with "60 Minutes" scheduled to air Sunday, Schwarzenegger said having sex with his housekeeper was "the stupidest thing" he ever did to his now-estranged wife and caused great pain to her and their four children. CBS aired excerpts of the interview Friday.
"I think it was the stupidest thing I've done in the whole relationship. It was terrible. I inflicted tremendous pain on Maria and unbelievable pain on the kids," Schwarzenegger tells "60 Minutes."
Schwarzenegger says he also let down the son he fathered with the housekeeper.
Shriver filed for divorce in July.
In his book, the usually ebullient Schwarzenegger admits to some loneliness, even though he packed his schedule with speeches, projects and movie-making after Shriver and the children moved out of the house. He said his career had been fun for 30 years because he shared it with Maria.
They had done everything together, he writes.
The former GOP governor also writes about a 2003 White House meeting with Karl Rove in which the top GOP strategist told him the recall would not happen and instead introduced the actor to then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice as his pick to run for California governor in 2006.
Schwarzenegger felt snubbed.
He asks, "How could Rove have been so wrong?"
Rove's office said he was traveling Friday and could not be reached for comment.
Rice's chief of staff at Stanford University, Georgia Godfrey, said Rice cannot recall "any conversation on this subject."
"She has stated many times in the past that she has no desire to run for public office and those sentiments have still not changed," Godfrey said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

Britney's ex manager to make drug claims

Britney Spears' ex manager Sam Lufti claims he found crystal meth in the star's home.
The 'X Factor' USA judge's former manager is set to bring up damaging drug claims about the period before her 2008 meltdown in his upcoming trial, according to legal documents filed about the court hearing.
The paperwork, obtained by TMZ, refers to a June 2007 incident in which ''drug-sniffing dogs found a cache of crystal meth in her home'' when he allegedly unleashed them on her property.
The documents state: ''Britney should further testify that drug dogs found hot spots of drug residue in the carpeting, where her young sons [ages 1 and 3] played during visits.''
Sam insists he tried to help the singer stay off drugs before he was fired in 2009, even shampooing and eventually replacing her carpets to hide the evidence.
Britney's former manager - who is suing the star and her parents for breach of contract and defamation - also plans to quiz her over comments she made to him saying her father Jamie was an ''abusive alcoholic'' and a ''violent racist'', according to the paperwork.
Britney's father and attorney Andrew Wallet have been in charge of her legal affairs since her breakdown, but Sam is currently fighting for the singer to appear in court in person as he wants to probe her about supposed statements made by her parents claiming he drugged her and cut her phone wires.
Despite her conservators claiming she is not fit enough to testify, he believes her ''articulate'' recent appearances alongside Simon Cowell on 'X Factor' prove she is.

Kate Middleton new nude photos printed in Danish magazine

Kate Middleton - Prince William and Kate Middleton on Boat in Ibiza Today

Photographs of Kate Middleton changing her bikini bottom have been published in a Danish magazine, reigniting the privacy scandal surrounding the Royal couple.
Celebrity magazine Se Og Hor (See And Hear) has gone further than any other publication and printed a 16-page special of photographs, including three of the Duchess of Cambridge changing her bikini bottoms – taken from the front.
The photos appear to be from the same set of shots originally taken while Prince William and his wife were holidaying in the South of France.
There are thought to be up to 200 photos taken of Kate and William when they were sunbathing at a secluded chateau.
The most revealing photograph in Se Og Hor, which appears on the front page of the magazine, shows the Duchess changing into a pair of blue bikini bottoms.
Kim Henningsen, Se Og Hor’s editor in chief, was unabashed by the threat of legal action and declined to say who sold the photographs or how much was paid for them.
miss mode: kate middleton
He said: ‘It’s a set of unique photos from an A-class celebrity. It is my job to publish them.’
Kate and William won a landmark injunction in France to stop further publication of the images by Closer magazine, under the threat of a €100,000 (£80,000) fine.
They have also handed over all files containing the images to representatives of the couple on the orders of the judge, after they were ruled a ‘brutal’ invasion of privacy.
The court made no ruling for the magazine to name the photographer, however, and it has the right to protect his or identity under France’s laws on protection of journalistic sources.
But the release of the unseen pictures of Kate confirms fears that the injunction will do little to halt the worldwide spread of the pictures.
The revealing photographs of the Royal couple relaxing on a private balcony were first published in French magazine Closer, before a 26-page special was published in Italy’s Chi and Ireland’s Irish Daily Star.

Kanye West Accused of Using Illegal Sample for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Kanye West is embroiled in a copyright lawsuit against a record label called TufAmerica. The New York label sues the one-half of Watch the Throne duo, claiming that the G.O.O.D Music boss is using a song sample in his 2010 album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" without permission.
TufAmerica alleges that two tracks of the album are using a sample of "Hook and Sling, Part 1", a 1969 funk song by New Orleans singer/pianist Eddie Bo. The label insists that it has obtained the rights to the single more than 15 years ago, and is surprised when finding out that the sample appears in Kanye's songs, "Who Will Survive in America?" and "Lost in the World".
The record company files its lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan. In its complaint, the label states that Yeezy's label Roc-A-Fella and its parent Universal Music Group have paid a license fee of $62,500, but they "failed and refused to enter into written license agreements that accounted for their multiple other uses of ['Hook and Sling']."
TufAmerica also mentions that the said sample appears in a music video for "Lost in the World" as well as a short film based on Kanye's song "Runaway". Represented by New York lawyer Kelly Talcott, the label is now demanding punitive damages for copyright infringement.
This is not the first time TufAmerica draws attention for suing a musician over copyright issue. Back in May, it filed a lawsuit against Beastie Boys a day before one member of the trio, Adam Yauch, died of cancer. The label accused the trio of ripping samples from Trouble Funk's songs for their 1980s albums "Licensed to Ill" and "Paul's Boutique".

24-Year-Old Chinese Singer Reportedly Dating 12-Year-Old Child Model

Zhang Muyi, a 24-year-old pop star from China, made shockwaves recently when he publicly declared his love for Akama Miki, a 12-year-old Canadian-based child model.
The pair, who have been rumored to be dating for some time, seem to be something like legit after Muyi left a romantic message for Miki on her Sina Weibo, a social networking site, right after her 12th birthday:
"Wait until I'm old enough to marry you, and then I'm going to say 'I do,'" Miki wrote on Muyi's Weibo page, where she has 500,000 followers, just after her 12th birthday. "I simply can't wait for these next four birthdays of yours to pass, I'm counting down each one," he wrote back.
Muyi and Miki have been acquainted for some time, as Muyi became Miki's music coach when she was 8. They've recorded duets together and flood their social networking profiles with pictures of the two of them. A year after hiring Muyi, Miki won the 2009 National New Silk Road Modeling Competition's Children Pageant.
The pair trended on Twitter as news of their apparent romance spread as more and more people read their sappy public messages, and Muyi responded to the rumors on his Weibo: "There's nothing we can do about this, nor do we feel the need to prove anything to these people. All we can do is continue to persevere with our love, our life, and being together."
So, are the pop star and model engaged in a publicity stunt (as one paper suggests?) Or is this a real relationship? No one seems to be sure.

Security Scare: Man Opens Fire On President

The Czech president has been attacked by a man with a plastic gun who fired pellets at him from just a metre away.
Pavel Ondrous, who was wearing military camouflage, approached the country's leader Vaclav Klaus during a ceremony to open a bridge, television footage showed.
Mr Klaus was hit in the arm but was unhurt and was quoted as saying to his bodyguards: "You really did not manage this well".
The gunman opened fire with a handgun that fires plastic pellets used in a game called airsoft, similar to paintball, Nova TV said.

He walked away after the attack in Chrastava, a village 60 miles north of Prague.
Ondrous told a reporter the government was "blind and deaf to the laments of the people".
He was arrested and handed over the fake gun to police.
Mr Klaus, 71, whose second and final term ends next March, is a popular figure in the central European EU country.
But is criticism of the euro, EU integration and efforts to halt global warming as well as his friendly stance towards Russia have won him some enemies.

After 15 years on death row, freedom!

A Louisiana man who spent 15 years on death row for a murder he did not commit was released Friday from prison in an exoneration brought about by the Innocence Project.
"It's been a long journey," Damon A. Thibodeaux, 38, said during a news conference with his lawyers. "It's people like y'all who give people like us a chance."
Thibodeaux, who was convicted after falsely confessing to having raped and murdered his 14-year-old step-cousin, said he hopes law enforcement will learn from his case.
"Make sure you have the right person before you start a process of executing someone," he said. "Because it costs a lot of money to go back and look at all of these cases again. If it's done right the first time, you shouldn't have to do that."
Thibodeaux described as "surreal" his walk earlier in the day out of Louisiana State Penitentiary. "It's not something you can prepare yourself for, because you've been living in those conditions for so long."
Asked how he felt, Thibodeaux did not hesitate. "Free," he said. "I feel free. I feel free."
Initially, he said, he felt like giving up, but resisted the temptation. "The minute you give up completely is the minute you die," he said. "Period."
Thibodeaux said that he was looking forward to "peace and quiet ... just concentrating on putting my life back together and moving forward."
His court-ordered release came after DNA and other evidence exonerated him. Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul Connick Jr. agreed with Thibodeaux's lawyers that he had confessed to something he did not do.
Connick "joined the Innocence Project and Thibodeaux's other counsel in agreeing to overturn Thibodeaux's conviction and death sentence after his confession to police was determined to be false," the district attorney said in a statement.
"This is a damn good day at the office," said Denise LeBoeuf, director of the ACLU Capital Punishment Project, who has represented Thibodeaux since 1998.
The case points to the need to abolish the death penalty, she said. "It doesn't make us safer; it makes the pain of murder worse; and if we can't figure out how to have a death penalty that doesn't put innocent men on death row and innocent women on death row across the country, then we don't deserve to have it. It is a human rights violation. We need to end it now."
Thibodeaux was convicted of killing his relative, Crystal Champagne, whose body was found on July 20, 1996, a day after she left her apartment to go to a nearby supermarket.
He was among a number of people who were interviewed by police. After some nine hours of interrogation, "he provided an apparent confession to raping and murdering the victim," the ACLU said in a news release. Primarily on that basis, Thibodeaux was convicted and sentenced to death in October 1997, it said.
A decade later, his legal team gave evidence to the district attorney of Thibodeaux's innocence and an investigation -- which wound up involving hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of DNA testing, forensic evidence and interviews -- got under way.
"The probe confirmed that Thibodeaux's confession was false in every significant aspect," the ACLU said.
Since 2000, six people have been released from Louisiana's death row after being exonerated; in that time, three people have been executed, it said.
"What we were doing was searching for the truth," said Barry Scheck, co-director of the Innocence Project, which is affiliated with New York's Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. "We hope that justice is done and we find the person who really committed the crime."
He said Thibodeaux was the 300th person exonerated through DNA testing.
Asked what might have led Thibodeaux to confess, Scheck said, "That is something that we're studying and is part of the lessons to be learned here. That's not one of the things that I think is probably appropriate for us to discuss at the moment."
The case points to the need for police to videotape interrogations, according to Scheck. Had that been done in this case, "we wouldn't be sitting here today," Scheck said. "It's a simple thing to do and it's sweeping the country."

Fuel Scarcity Worsens In Lagos Despite NNPC Assurances

The current fuel scarcity in Lagos and environs, which started a fortnight ago, is gradually becoming a way of life, as most filling stations, especially those owned by independent marketers, with products to dispense are selling Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise known as petrol, for as much as N120 per litre in some places.
A drive round the metropolis yesterday showed that most stations were not selling petrol, while a few dispensing had to contend with long queues.
The scarcity has affected traffic on the roads, with fewer vehicles plying the routes, thus compelling commuters to wait longer at the bus stops.
On the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway leading to Apapa Ports, traffic was as light as normally witnessed on public holidays. Same for Agege Motor road and Abeokuta Expressway.
The situation appears to be getting worse by the day, despite assurances by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) that it had taken measures to scale up supplies to Lagos and environs.
Gradually, hoarding or selling in the night, and hawking of petrol in jerry cans and kegs, as well as black market are thriving in the city, even close to filling stations, with some of the products looking adulterated.
Investigations by The Guardian showed that there is little sign of the situation getting better this week, even as the country marks its 52nd independence anniversary.
At one of the filling stations in the city, an attendant, when confronted over the increase in pump price, said he was acting on instruction of his manager.
The manager at another station selling at N110 told The Guardian that he bought the product at the rate of 96 per litre from the depot.
The few with the product and selling at the official rate of N97 per litre had hectic time coping with the surging crowd of customers of mainly commercial bus drivers.
Some marketers were selling 10 litres of petrol for between N1700 and N2000, while others sold at N1500, depending on the location.
It was gathered that about 92 ships are to arrive Lagos ports between September 26 and 22 October, 17 of which would convey petroleum products.
Some are said to have already arrived and waiting to berth and discharge petroleum products at various oil terminals within the Lagos ports.
The discharge of the products would bring some relief to Lagosians, who are worried that the country may be about to return to the past, where fuel queues were common scenes.
The fuel shortage was initially attributed to the refusal of petroleum products importers to import fuel as a result of Federal Government’s delay in paying them for the products already brought in, as it tried to verify their claims, following monumental fraud that had chatacterised the exercise recently.
The situation was worsened by the attack on officials trying to fix vandalised pipelines at Arepo which conveys products to Mosemi depot in Ore, Ondo State, the main bridging point.

Somalia's al Shabaab rebels pull out of Kismayu bastion

Somalia's al Shabaab rebels withdrew from their last major bastion of Kismayu overnight, the group and residents said, a day after Kenyan and Somali government forces attacked the southern port.
The loss of Kismayu will deal a major blow to the al Qaeda-linked movement, weakening morale and depriving it of revenue, but is unlikely to mark the end of its five-year rebellion.
The insurgents, who once controlled large swathes of the lawless Horn of Africa country, have been turning to guerrilla-style tactics, harrying the country's weak government with suicide bombings and assassinations.
"We moved out our fighters ... from Kismayu at midnight," al Shabaab spokesman, Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, told Reuters on Saturday.
Rage threatened to strike back. "The enemies have not yet entered the town. Let them enter Kismayu which will soon turn into a battlefield," he said.
Locals confirmed the militants had pulled out under the cover of darkness but said the Kenyan troops, fighting under an African Union peacekeeping force's banner, and Somali soldiers were still camped on the city's outskirts.
There were reports of looting in some areas of the city.
"Al Shabaab has not perished, so the worry is what next," said local elder Ali Hussein.
One man who was loudly celebrating the departure of al Shabaab fighters from the city was shot dead by two masked men, residents said.
"These masked men came from behind him and hit him with several bullets right in the head... Now we are terrified, everyone in Kismayu is dumb silent. We are afraid to talk on the phone outdoors," said Halima Nur, a mother of three children.
Al Shabaab, which formally merged with al Qaeda in February, has been steadily losing its footholds under sustained pressure from African Union peacekeeping forces (AMISOM) and Somali government troops for the past year.
The rebel group, which counts foreign al Qaeda-trained fighters among its ranks, is seen as one of the biggest threats to stability in the Horn of Africa. It has received advice from al Qaeda's leadership, counter-terrorism experts say.
Residents said the fighters who had abandoned Kismayu had moved to the jungles that lie between Kismayu and Afmadow as well as to other towns north of the port city like Jamame and Kabsuma.
Kenyan military spokesman Col. Cyrus Oguna said his force was still trying to check whether al Shabaab had withdrawn, and would move into the city if the rebels did not put up resistance.
Al Shabaab has pulled out of a number of urban areas including the capital, Mogadishu, in recent months under pressure from advancing African Union forces. But their continuing guerrilla attacks still pose a big challenge for newly-elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Muslim girl must do swim class - German court

A German court on Friday refused to allow a Muslim student to skip swimming lessons after she said she was uncomfortable being so close to bare-chested boys.
The 12-year-old, originally from Morocco but going to school in the southern German city of Frankfurt, had refused to take part in swimming lessons and had been marked down accordingly.
She filed to be given the right to skip the classes, her lawyer arguing that according to the Qu'ran, she was not only forbidden from showing herself to boys but also from seeing the topless boys.
An administrative court in Kassel, western Germany, rejected her application.
It said in its ruling that she could wear the full-body swimsuit, known as the "burkini" already used by several girls at her school, which would be enough to guarantee her religious freedom.
The family had chosen to live in Germany where mixed swimming classes were the norm, the court pointed out.
One of the aims of the school system was to promote integration and tolerance, the court added, citing a ruling by Germany's constitutional court.
The applicant would have to put up with the sight of her classmates in their swimming costumes, the court said.

Mexico Finds Cartel Radio Network, 300-Foot Tower

Mexican navy personnel say they have found a radio communications network operated by a drug cartel, complete with a 300-foot (90-meter) transmission tower.
The navy says the radio equipment and several towers were found in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz. The system reached into the neighboring state of Tamaulipas.
The navy says the system was detected last week and marines moved in to dismantle it.
Friday's statement does not say which cartel had operated the system. But the Gulf cartel and the Zetas gang operate in the area and have been known to operate such sophisticated communications systems.

China Launches 2nd Satellite Built for Venezuela

China has launched a second satellite built for Venezuela's government.
The remote sensing satellite soared into orbit atop a rocket from the northwestern Chinese province of Gansu.
The launch was shown live on Venezuelan TV on Friday night. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez applauded as he watched alongside aides in Caracas, congratulating those who worked on the project.
Officials have said the satellite cost $140 million and will provide images for tasks such as mapping croplands, counter-drug efforts and monitoring floods.
The launch came more than a week ahead of Venezuela's Oct. 7 presidential election, in which Chavez is seeking another six-year term.
The satellite is named after Venezuelan independence hero Francisco de Miranda.
Venezuela's first satellite was named after independence leader Simon Bolivar. It was launched from China in 2008.

Diezani Alison-Madueke maintained rooms in two New York luxury hotels during UN Assembly – SaharaReporters

Investigations by SaharaReporters has revealed that Nigeria’s Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, booked and paid for two rooms in two separate high-cost hotels during the four nights she spent in New York City during the just concluded United Nations General Assembly.
Impeccable sources within the Presidency and the delegation of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) disclosed that the minister’s two rooms were booked under a pseudonym.
Saharareporters discovered that Joe Mordi, one of the minister’s closest aides who works at the NNPC office in London, booked her into a one-bedroom suite at Four Seasons Hotel located at 57 East 57th Street, New York.
When SaharaReporters inquired at the hotel, a staff said that the suite cost $5,000 per night. Ms. Alison-Madueke, who is known around Presidency circles as “Prime Minister,” was also booked into another room at the Pierre Hotel on 2 East 61st Street in New York where President Goodluck Jonathan lodged during his stay in New York. SaharaReporters found out that her room on the 28th floor of the Pierre Hotel cost Nigerian tax payers $3,000 per night. There were also additional charges in taxes and service fees.
Ms. Alison-Madueke arrived in New York in style on a private jet on Monday from London where she had made a brief stop to continue treatment for an undisclosed ailment. She is billed to return to London today. President Jonathan left New York last night around 6:00 p.m. and has arrived in Nigeria very early today.
SaharaReporters also learnt that, apart from the lavish double accommodation enjoyed by the Petroleum minister in two of New York City’s most expensive hotels, her delegation of seven NNPC officials also engaged in other acts of reckless spending. “The NNPC hired ten limousines to ferry its 7 officials, including the General Managing Director,” said our source. Five of the limousines, rented for $1,800 each per day, were stationed permanently in front of the Pierre Hotel while another five were put to the service of the NNPC officials at the Four Seasons.
The Nigerian delegation’s profligacy during the New York trip earned the attraction of America’s mainstream media. New York-based National Broadcasting Corporation ((NBC), one of the top three television networks in the US, yesterday reported that African delegates from the poorest countries stayed in some of the most expensive hotels and shopped in high-priced retail stores during the UN General Assembly. The network focused on delegates from such countries as Togo, Swaziland, and Nigeria. SaharaReporters had earlier reported that President Jonathan was quartered at the Pierre Hotel in a suite that cost $10,000 per night.
International measurements of social indices routinely rank Nigeria as one of the world’s least developed countries. Some 70% of Nigerians live on less than 2 dollars per day. “It is sad that the mindless waste of public resources in New York by President Jonathan and other Nigerian officials was happening at a time when two million Nigerians have been displaced from their homes by ravaging floods,” said an Abuja-based civil society activist.

Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson and Usher are among the stars who will pay tribute to the late Whitney Houston in a one-hour TV special.
"We Will Always Love You: A Grammy Salute to Whitney Houston" will be filmed at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live and will feature performances by Dion, Hudson and Usher.
The show will include Houston's "most memorable performances" and interviews with various artists.
Meanwhile, a exhibition dedicated to the late Whitney Houston has opened in Los Angeles last month.
'Whitney! Celebrating The Musical Legacy of Whitney Houston' was launched at the Grammy Museum for fans willing to pay their respects to the singer.
Whitney's manager and sister-in-law, Pat Houston, attended the press preview yesterday and spoke about the project.
Pat said: ''We have picked the things that people will find the most interesting and, in many cases, bring back fun memories. We are really very overjoyed that we are here today to represent and be a part of such a wonderful and splendid career of such a beautiful and talented woman.''
The exhibition will run until February 2013 and includes photographs and footage from the Houston family's private collection.

Iran fooled by US satirical website The Onion

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gestures as he attends the high level meeting on rule of law in the United Nations General Assembly

Iran's state media has fallen for a made-up poll from a satirical US website claiming that a majority of rural white Americans would vote for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over Barack Obama.
Fars News Agency, a semi-official mouth piece of the Iranian regime, earnestly published a word-for-word duplicate of an article from the Onion, a spoof news organisation based in Chicago.
The satirical article cited a fake Gallup poll which found that 77 per cent of white, rural voters would rather go to a baseball game or have a beer with Mr Ahmadinejad than with the US president.
It went on to cite a made-up West Virginian named Dale Swiderski, who said that he preferred the Iranian to Mr Obama because: "He takes national defense seriously, and he'd never let some gay protesters tell him how to run his country like Obama does."
Fars, which loyally prints the anti-Western and anti-Israeli tirades of senior Iranian officials, copied the entire Onion article without giving any indication of its source.
It printed the short bulletin in English but did not appear to have translated it into Farsi.
Will Tracy, the editor of the Onion, released a statement joking that Fars was a subsidiary of the Onion. "They have acted as our Middle Eastern bureau since the mid 1980s, when the Onion’s publisher, T. Herman Zweibel, founded Fars with the government approval of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini. The Onion freely shares content with Fars and commends the journalists at Iran’s Finest News Source on their superb reportage."
Many news organisations have fallen victim to the Onion's mock-serious news style. In 2004, a Beijing paper reported on an Onion piece which claimed that members of Congress were threatening to move out of Washington unless their lavatories were upgraded.

Steve Kean resigns as Blackburn Rovers manager saying his position had become 'untenable'

The Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean has resigned.

Steve Kean's troubled reign as Blackburn manager came to an end on Friday night as he resigned from his role, saying in a statement that he had been "forced" out and that his position had become "untenable".
The Scot has been a much-derided figure at Ewood Park for the duration of his near two-year spell in charge, with the low point being relegation from the Premier League in May.
But despite poor results on the pitch, Kean retained the backing of the club's owners, Venky's – much to the fury of supporters who regularly protested against him.
The tide seemed to have turned for the 44-year-old this season, on the pitch at least, as Blackburn made a positive start to the campaign, with Rovers sitting third in the Championship table ahead of tomorrow's trip to Charlton.
Fan unrest has continued, though, and tonight, in a statement issued through his lawyers, Kean said: "For reasons that I cannot discuss on legal advice, it is with deep regret, given my hard work and service for the club for a number of years, that I have been forced to resign as manager of Blackburn Rovers Football Club with immediate effect, due to my position as team manager becoming untenable.
"I wish to thank all the players and coaching staff for their great support and the majority of the fans, who now see their club heading towards an automatic promotion position back to the Premiership. I wish the club all the very best for the future."
There was no sign of Kean's decision to step down on the club's official website, with the lead story one of him talking of a "positive week".
When contacted by Press Association Sport, managing director Derek Shaw said: "I have been travelling down to London and this is the first I have heard of it."
Kean was appointed as Rovers boss in December 2010, replacing Sam Allardyce who was relieved of his duties despite saving the club from relegation the previous season.
Kean's contract was upgraded a month later and, although he Kept them up that campaign, it was clear he was not a terrace favourite.
As Rovers struggled at the start of the 2011-12 season, the calls for Kean to stand down became stronger, but despite that, he was again given an improved deal in the November.
Regular protests reached their most vicious when Blackburn lost a six-point relegation battle at home to Bolton but Venky's remained nerveless, though, standing by their man despite a seemingly inevitable relegation being confirmed when they drew at Wigan in May.
Even the most loyal Blackburn fans expected Kean might be relieved of his duties over the summer, but the faith remained in the boardroom, despite disparaging public comments from director of football Shebby Singh, who had to apologise for stating Kean would be sacked if he lost three games in a row.
Kean was heavily backed in the transfer market, signing Huddersfield's Jordan Rhodes for £8million, but despite only losing their first league game of the season last Friday, he remained under heavy pressure.
Singh did little to douse the fires this week when he said the situation was getting worse "day by day", with those comments coming three days before Kean's decision to stand down.

Shocking! Man sexually assaulted 4-year-old, 7-month-old

Thomas Fleming, Autumn Ash

A 22-year-old Volusia County man accused of repeatedly raping a 4-year-old girl and recording the acts with his cellphone is now also accused of sexually abusing a 7-month-old, and his ex-girlfriend has also been charged.
Thomas Fleming was arrested in Deltona Friday night after the disturbing images and video were found on his ex-girlfriend's cellphone.
Deputies said when they questioned Fleming, he admitted to having sex with the child and sending the images.
Investigators said they now have evidence Fleming also repeatedly assaulted the 7-month-old and the ex-girlfriend is involved.
Sheriff's investigators arrested 20-year-old Autumn Ash Monday night.
Investigators said Ash admitted performing sex acts on a 7-month-old and took pictures of the sexual assault.
A neighbor of Ash's is stunned by what deputies said was going on just down the street.
"Sickening. It makes me want to throw up living that close, having two children of my own. Sickening," said neighbor Billie Joe Marek.
Authorities said Ash told them Fleming would send her the images and they would text each other and talk about sexual fantasies involving the 4-year-old.
Ash is being held without bond. Fleming is also being held without bond in the Volusia County Jail.

Rep: Tom Cruise Is Not Dating Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise attend the UK Film Premiere of 'Knight And Day' at Odeon Leicester Square on July 22, 2010 in London, England.

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz are close, but not as close as the tabloid Life & Style would like its readers to believe.
The Rock of Ages actor, 50, was recently romantically linked to the What to Expect When You're Expecting actress, 40; Cruise split with wife Katie Holmes, 33, in late June after five years of marriage. (The Romantics actress won primary custody of their daughter, Suri, 6; they currently reside in New York City.)
"It's false," Cruise's rep told E! News of reports he's dating Diaz. "They are friends."
Cruise and Diaz have starred in two films together: Cameron Crowe's Vanilla Sky (2001) and James Mangold's Knight and Day (2010). Working with Cruise has always been enjoyable for Diaz, whose exes include Jared Leto, 40, Justin Timberlake, 31, and Alex Rodriguez, 37.
"He has a very high standard," Diaz said on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2010. "So that's a wonderful thing. That's what you know you're getting when you're working with Tom. You know that you're getting someone who is dedicated to bringing the best product forward possible, and to do that, you have to be engaged in the process."
Like Diaz, Cruise is currently single. He was previously married to Mimi Rogers, 56, and Nicole Kidman, 45.

Victory for John Travolta as he wins legal battle against author claiming he frequented gay spas

John Travolta has emerged victorious in a legal battle against the author of a book who claims the actor frequented gay bathhouses.
Robert Randolph, author of You'll Never Spa in This Town Again, has unsuccessfully sued Travolta for libel.
Randolph claimed Travolta and his lawyer conspired to discredit him and his book by spreading lies about his mental health.
A letter fired off and allegedly leaked by Travolta's lawyer Marty Singer also stated Randolph's book was packed with lies.
Subsequently the judge overseeing the case dismissed it today, agreeing with Travolta and Singer's lawyer Lynda Goldman.
The judge ruled the letter was a legitimate part of the legal dispute over the book, and therefore protected by the First Amendment.
This means essentially that Travolta and Singer cannot be sued over the letter. Meanwhile, Travolta has faced a barrage of gay claims.
Compounded with allegations by a slew of characters citing his inappropriate same sex advances.
In recent months, the celebrity Scientologist's sexuality became a hot topic again when he was accused by several men of sexually harassing them.
Travolta has long remained mum about his sexuality and though he has denied the accusations.
The actor has also yet to speak openly about the allegations of sexual impropriety.
In May, three months after the aforementioned tell-all book was released, two masseurs filed lawsuits.
They claimed he had inappropriately touched them in incidents in Beverly Hills and Atlanta.
Both men whose identities were withheld in court documents dropped their lawsuits later that month.
Now, two more claims have surfaced.
One was from a man who filed an assault-and-battery claim against Travolta in U.S. District Court on June 21 for an incident he alleges occurred on a cruise ship in 2009.
Fabian Zanzi, a cruise-ship employee, claims Travolta made unwanted sexual advances toward him and is asking for a jury trial to determine compensation.
The next day, Robert Randolph filed is lawsuit against the actor and his lawyer for libel in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Daredevil plans record-breaking leap from edge of space

Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner gets set to leap from his capsule at an altitude of roughly 71,500 feet on March 15, 2012

An Austrian daredevil plans to leap from nearly 23 miles above the Earth on Oct. 8 in a supersonic plunge that, if successful, will be the world's highest-ever skydive.
If all goes according to plan, a helium-filled balloon will lift off from Roswell, N.M., on Oct. 8 and carry Felix Baumgartner's custom-built capsule to an altitude of 120,000 feet (36,576 meters). The daredevil will then step out of the capsule into the void, breaking a skydiving record that has stood for 52 years.
Baumgartner's 2,900-pound (1,315 kilograms) capsule was damaged in a hard landing during a July 25 practice run from 97,146 feet (29,610 m), forcing a delay while repairs were made. But on Monday (Sept. 24), officials with Red Bull Stratos — the name of Baumgartner's mission — declared the capsule fit for launch and set Oct. 8 as the target date for the skydiver's "space jump."
The all-clear came as welcome news to Baumgartner, who is itching to go.
"I feel like a tiger in a cage waiting to get out," the 43-year-old skydiver said in a statement.
The current record for world's highest skydive stands at 102,800 feet (31,333 m). It was set in 1960 by U.S. Air Force Captain Joe Kittinger, who serves as an adviser for Baumgartner's mission
If Baumgartner succeeds on Oct. 8, he will break not only that mark but also the sound barrier, becoming the first skydiver ever to fall at supersonic speeds, Red Bull Stratos officials said. During the July 25 jump, Baumgartner's top freefall speed was 537 mph (864 kph) — about as fast as a commercial airliner.
On Oct. 8, Baumgartner hopes to etch his names in the record books for highest skydive, fastest freefall, longest freefall and highest manned balloon flight. But his mission could have scientific value as well, collecting data that could help enable high-altitude escapes from spacecraft, mission officials said.
Red Bull Stratos describes the Oct. 8 attempt as a jump from the edge of space. But space is generally considered to begin at an altitude of 62 miles, or 327,000 feet.
The team is cautiously optimistic that the weather will cooperate on Oct. 8.
"Early fall in New Mexico is one of the best times of the year to launch stratospheric balloons," mission meteorologist Don Day said.
Baumgartner and his team had originally hoped to attempt the record jump in 2010, but they were delayed by a legal challenge that claimed the idea of the dive was suggested to Red Bull by California promoter Daniel Hogan. That lawsuit has been settled out of court, and the mission is moving forward.

Apple CEO Apologizes for New Maps App: It ‘Fell Short’

In an extremely rare move, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook publicly apologized for the company’s new maps app, which replaced Google Maps on the iPhone.
Cook admits the new maps application “fell short” of the company’s commitment to providing the “best experience possible” and the CEO even goes on to recommend that customers try out other maps applications — including Google’s — while Apple works to improve its own.
The maps app has been widely panned by reviewers and customers alike online, for having many fundamental errors in 3D mapping and directions, and falling short of the standard set by Google Maps.

Here’s the full letter from Cook:

To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.

There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you.

While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

Tim Cook
Apple’s CEO

Meet bling-loving Lola, Britian's most pampered pooch

Britain's most pampered pooch Yorkshire Terrier Lola is just eight years old and already owns a £25,000 diamond necklace
Britain's most pampered pooch Yorkshire Terrier Lola is just eight years old and already owns a £25,000 diamond necklace
From £5,000 pet beds to a pink and white diamond necklace worth a cool £25,000, Britain's most pampered pooch, eight year old Yorkshire Terrier Lola, wants for nothing.
And owner, Louise Harris, 33, has been getting in on the act with a matching necklace and clothes.
The stunning necklaces are made from platinum and pink and white diamonds, which have been formed into letters to spell DIVA and, incredibly, were a gift from wealthy admirers to celebrate the launch of Louise's guide to pampering pets.
Louise, who lives in Essex and runs a pet boutique called Diva Dogs, said: 'The necklaces are so beautiful. I was stunned when they gave them to us.
'I think £25,000 might be quite a lot of money for a dog necklace but Lola is very special. She is certainly worthy of wearing such a fine piece of jewellery - she is the queen of Diva Dogs.
'But I don’t think we will be wearing them just to go for walkies - from now on we will only take them out on special occasions.
In the past Louise has lavished Lola with gifts totalling £100,00, which include tiaras, clothes and a £5,000 custom made bed and the duo starred in Sky 1's 2006 documentary, A Different Breed.
Not content with being the official queen of lap dogs in Britain, Louise has set up a world record attempt on Sunday called Diva Dog Day - hoping to gather the most dogs in outfits under one roof.
Lola has been lavished with over £10,000 worth of gifts from owner Louise since she was a puppy

Hilariously, the pair will also be wearing matching outfits consisting of a pink frilly dress covered in sparkly sequins and a pink feather headdress for the event.
The lavish pet present was handed over this week as it emerged animal charities revealed they were being forced to deal with handbag dogs which have been so pampered they don’t know how to walk.
Blue Cross animal centres in Britain said the number of Paris Hilton-inspired handbag dogs being handed into its care had trebled in the past 12 months - 191 pets in total.
Not that Lola is likely to end up in a rescue centre anytime soon. 'She gets a lot of gifts from me but she is well worth it [because] she helped change my life,' continues owner, Louise. 'I went from a bored, stressed city analyst to living the dream all thanks to her.'

Dozens escape in raid on Iraqi prison

Dozens of prisoners are on the loose after militants attacked a prison in the Iraqi city of Tikrit, leaving at least 13 policemen dead, officials say.
The violence at the prison comes after al-Qaeda's Iraqi front group announced a campaign to regain territory and said it aimed to help its jailed members escape.
Salaheddin provincial deputy governor Ahmed Abdul Jabbar told AFP by telephone that the Tikrit prison had been retaken from militants who seized it on Thursday night, but that 83 prisoners escaped.
A hospital official in Tikrit, the ancestral home of now-executed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, said 13 police were killed and 34 wounded in the violence.
A source in the Salaheddin police command said, meanwhile, that 15 policemen and seven prisoners were killed, and put the number of escaped prisoners at about 100.
"We took control of the prison, and the gunmen handed over their weapons," the official said.
Accounts differed on the specifics of the unrest, but it appears militants attacked from outside the prison, while inmates may have seized weapons from guards inside.
A police lieutenant colonel said on Thursday that a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb at the gate of the prison, after which it was assaulted by gunmen.
And a traffic police lieutenant colonel who was near the scene of the attack said militants blew up part of the prison fence, and between 30 and 40 inmates were able to escape.
A police colonel said riots broke out in the prison, while witnesses said inmates seized the guards' weapons, and that more than 100 of them escaped and fought security forces in the surrounding area.
The tactics reportedly employed in the assault were reminiscent of those used in attacks in July and August.
Gunmen attempted to use bombs to breach a prison gate in Taji, north of Baghdad, on August 1, after using similar tactics on the anti-terrorism directorate in the capital the day before in an attack the interior ministry said was an attempt to free inmates.
Al-Qaeda front group the Islamic State of Iraq said in July that it was launching a "new military campaign aimed at recovering territory".
An earlier message posted on jihadist forums said the ISI would begin targeting judges and prosecutors, and try to help its prisoners break out of jails.
While insurgents opposed to the Baghdad government are regarded as weaker than in past years, they have shown they can strike at even the most highly secure sites in Iraq.
In addition to the prisons in Tikrit and Taji and the anti-terrorism directorate, targets in recent months have included a police station, a military base and an entrance to Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, where the government is headquartered.

John Terry’s £800k legal bill

John Terry

John Terry faces a mega £800,000 bill over the Anton Ferdinand race row.
And Chelsea will not pay a penny of it.
JT was “disappointed” after the FA yesterday found him guilty of racially abusing the QPR defender.
He copped a four-game ban and an FA record £220,000 fine.
But that is only a fraction of the sum Chelsea’s captain spent fighting his case.
Terry, 31, has run up legal fees estimated at £750,000 battling his criminal and FA charges.
He hopes to recoup around £400,000 from the court case, where he was found not guilty.
But the ex-England skipper is now liable to pay the costs of the FA hearing, too, said to be at least £200,000.
That brings his total bill to a whopping £770,000.
But if Terry decides to continue his fight and appeal against the FA’s punishment, his legal bill will rise even further.
A statement issued on his behalf said: “Mr Terry is disappointed that the FA commission has reached a different conclusion to the clear not guilty verdict of a court of law.
“He has asked for the detailed written reasons of the decision and will consider them carefully before deciding whether to lodge an appeal.”

Alan Pardew has signed an eight-year deal at Newcastle

DEAL ME IN ... Alan Pardew has signed an eight-year deal at Newcastle

Alan Pardew has been handed an amazing EIGHT-YEAR deal by Newcastle worth £25million.
Toon boss Pards and three of his backroom team have agreed new contracts to keep them at St James’ Park until 2020.
It is a massive vote of confidence from owner Mike Ashley — who wants Pardew to become the Tyneside version of Alex Ferguson.
Managing director Derek Llambias said: “If you look at Manchester United and Arsenal, Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger have shown that stability gives you the best platform to achieve success.
“That’s the model we wish to emulate here.
“Alan’s done a fantastic job and has proved what a great manager he is.
“These contracts are aimed at keeping the club progressing.”
The deal means Pardew — who joined the club in 2010 after Toon had been through SEVEN managers in FIVE years — will be due a hefty payout if he is sacked before the end of it.
But, on the plus side, it also means Ashley would be due a bumper amount of compensation if Pards was head-hunted.
Pardew’s basic £30,000-a-week wages will remain roughly the same with bonuses for guiding the club into Europe each season and winning trophies.
His assistant John Carver and coaches Steve Stone and Andy Woodman have also been awarded long-term deals.

Nicole Scherzinger and Chris Brown kiss’ in LA nightclub

Nicole Scherzinger risks the wrath of F1 lover Lewis Hamilton after appearing to be caught kissing rapper Chris Brown.
The X Factor judge and Rihanna’s bad boy ex got close at a club in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
The stars danced together and spent much of the evening side by side talking.
Nicole’s friend Will.i.am was close-by.
Wearing a grey beanie hat the former Pussycat Doll, 34, giggled as Chris, 23, spoke over the microphone at LA’s Supperclub Venue.
Reports in the US claimed the cosy pair had been kissing, but they were fiercely denied by talent show beauty Nicole.
Her spokesman said: “There is absolutely no truth to the ridiculous story regarding Nicole and Chris Brown. The photos are of old friends who were trying to talk at a very loud club. They were not kissing.”
Chris Brown & Nicole Scherzinger Kissing in Nightclub

Nicole has been in an on-off relationship with F1 ace Lewis, 27, since 2010.
In July this year the McLaren driver invited ten girls back to a £4,000-a-night hotel penthouse in London after an eight-hour party session with US rapper J. Cole.
However Nicole stood by Lewis after he made a grovelling apology.
Womaniser Chris has been growing increasingly close to former love Rihanna, 24.
They split after he admitted assaulting her in 2009. The pair kissed at the MTV VMA ceremony earlier this month and Rihanna confessed to chat show host Oprah Winfrey she still loves him.

German woman suspected of killing five of her babies

Ulrike Stahlmann-Liebelt Germany Baby Killings

A woman killed her five infants shortly after giving birth in secret at home and in the woods because each time she got pregnant she worried her husband would leave her if she had any more children, authorities say.
The woman, 28, who has been arrested on five counts of manslaughter, made a "comprehensive confession" to the killings after turning herself in as a six-year investigation closed in on her, said Ulrike Stahlmann-Liebelt, the head prosecutor in Flensburg, on Germany's border with Denmark.
Stahlmann-Liebelt said the woman, whose name was not released in accordance with German privacy laws, has two living children, aged eight and 10. But then in 2006 she began hiding her pregnancies, staying away from doctors and hospitals and killing the infants after giving birth to two at home and three in the woods, she said.
"She had the impression her husband would leave her if she had any more children, and that's why she didn't tell anyone she was pregnant, including her husband," Stahlmann-Liebelt said.
"She has said that the family lived at a certain level of prosperity, that it was clear her husband did not want any more children, and that one reason was to preserve this standard, and she feared that might be endangered if another child were there."
The husband has told police he knew nothing about the pregnancies, Stahlmann-Liebelt said, and it wasn't entirely clear how the woman managed to keep them secret.
Stahlmann-Liebelt said there have been other cases when woman's pregnancy can go unnoticed by their partners and others.
Police found the first infant's body dumped in a paper sorting station in 2006 about 15 kilometres away from the town of Husum, where the woman lived. The second was found in a parking area off a regional highway, also about the same distance from Husum but in a different direction, in 2007.
After reading news reports that DNA results had confirmed the two children had the same parents, the woman then decided not to dispose the other bodies in public places, police official Dirk Czarnetzki said.
She hid the next three infants - whose existence authorities were unaware of until the woman's confession - in boxes in the basement of the building where she lived.
After finding the first two babies, authorities were able to narrow down the likelihood that the parents came from the area around Husum, a town on the North Sea coast.
In the course of the investigation they took hundreds of DNA tests from women in the area over time and took a sample from the woman on Tuesday, Czarnetzki said at a televised news conference. A short time after - before the sample had been processed - the woman turned herself in and confessed, he said.

Google defends hosting of Islam film

GOOGLE'S executive chairman Eric Schmidt defended on Thursday YouTube's hosting of an anti-Islam film that sparked violent global protests, saying the answer to "bad speech is more speech" -- not a ban.
Google, the parent company of the video-sharing site, has blocked access to "Innocence of Muslims" in a number of nations, including India, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, where it is deemed illegal.
But Schmidt stressed that the low-budget video met YouTube's basic criteria for material that can be posted, which is why it remains accessible in many countries.
"Google has a very clear view on this, which is that we believe the answer to bad speech is more speech," he told reporters in the South Korean capital Seoul.
Violence triggered by the film, which mocks the Prophet Mohammed, has claimed around 50 lives, including that of the US ambassador to Libya.
"We obviously do not endorse the use of the video or these ideas... hatred or violence or anything, but we openly believe that the best answer to it is more speech, not the other way around," Schmidt said.
"Some countries disagree. There are some places where we had to actually block access to that video," he added.
Other countries, including Pakistan and Sudan, blocked the access themselves.

Train kills woman in Lagos

Tragedy struck on Wednesday when a passenger train crushed a middle-aged woman at Oshodi in Lagos. The woman according to eyewitness was trying to avoid a puddle of water beside the rail tracks when the incident happened at about 7:15 a.m.
"The woman was trying to avoid muddy water along the tracks when the Ijoko-Apapa passenger’s train crushed her to death.
"The woman instead of jumping into the muddy water was trying to avoid it and the fast moving train dragged her under.
"It was like a magic. It was like a movie. The train dragged her underneath and it was so fast for comprehension.
"In fact, her blood splintered on some passers-by who were also waiting patiently along the tracks for the fast moving train to pass before moving.
"Worst still, the train did not stop but dragged her body for about one kilometer thereby mutilating the body,” the witness said.
Many of the passers-by were seen wailing on seeing the mutilated body of the woman.
On Sept. 20, a woman and her child were crushed to death while trying to cross the rail tracks at Oshodi.
"I think it is time the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) management construct a barricade along the busy train tracks to avoid such occurrences.
"This is not the first time this kind of accident is happening, it has become an everyday accident,” Mrs Ronke Adelagun, a passenger said.
Mr Felix Oguma, a trader at Oshodi, urged the management of the corporation to embark on massive campaign against indiscriminate trading and loitering around the train tracks.
"Many people are unaware of train movement in Lagos, so they cross the tracks indiscriminately,” Oguma said.
Ademuyiwa Adekanbi, the Lagos District Public Relations Officer of the Railways, described the incident as unfortunate.
Adekanbi said that corporation had embarked on series of campaigns against indiscriminate crossings of train tracks.

France set to ban the words 'mother' and 'father' from official documents

French prisoner sends severed finger to justice minister
France's Justice Minister Christiane Taubira

France is set to ban the words "mother" and "father" from all official documents under controversial plans to legalise gay marriage.
The move, which has outraged Catholics, means only the word "parents" would be used in identical marriage ceremonies for all heterosexual and same-sex couples.
The draft law states that "marriage is a union of two people, of different or the same gender".
It says all references to "mothers and fathers" in the civil code – which enshrines French law – will be swapped for simply "parents".
The law would also give equal adoption rights to homosexual and heterosexual couples.
Justice Minister Christiane Taubira told France's Catholic newspaper La Croix: "Who is to say that a heterosexual couple will bring a child up better than a homosexual couple, that they will guarantee the best conditions for the child's development?"
"What is certain is that the interest of the child is a major preoccupation for the government."
The head of the French Catholic Church Cardinal Philippe Barbarin warned followers last week that gay marriage could lead to legalised incest and polygamy in society.
He told the Christian's RFC radio station: "Gay marriage would herald a complete breakdown in society.
"This could have innumerable consequences. Afterward they will want to create couples with three or four members. And after that, perhaps one day the taboo of incest will fall."
Leading French Catholics have also published a 'Prayer for France', which says: "Children should not be subjected to adults' desires and conflicts, so they can fully benefit from the love of their mother and father."
And Pope Benedict XVI invited 30 French bishops to Italy to urge them to fight against the new law.
He told them: "We have there a true challenge to take on.
"The family that is the foundation of social life is threatened in many places, following a concept of human nature that has proven defective."
President Francois Hollande pledged in his manifesto to legalise gay marriage. The draft law will be presented to his cabinet for approval on October 31.

CORRECTION GERMANY-TV-SHOW-WETTEN DASS-LADY GAGA

The New York restaurant owned by Lady Gaga's parents has been panned as ''a weird facsimile of a restaurant".
And that was one of the nicer comments that reviewer Michael Kaminer from the New York Daily News had to say about Joanne Trattoria, Joe and Cynthia Germanotta’s Upper West Side restaurant, which he gives 1 star.
Kaminer says he went to the restaurant with an open mind despite his colleagues portraying Joanne Trattoria as ''the worst thing since herpes."
''When a restaurant charges $US18 for fried calamari, should the dish arrive so sloppily plated that it looks like the kitchen threw it back in the bowl after dropping it? Should the appetiser glow with grease or boast more breadcrumbs than squid? And should the accompanying marinara sauce taste like a powdered mix?'' Kaminer asks.
''Any goodwill you muster will go out the window when you notice “Expresso” — yes, with an “x” — for $US5 on Joanne’s menu. It’s more like concentrated Sanka, but you’ll need it to avoid choking on a tiramisu cake ($US14) whose desiccated base holds gelatinous cream tasting vaguely of plastic.''
The reviewer says the place is "charmless and generic" and wonders how the restaurant's namesake, Joe's sister Josephine, feels about having her name attached.
He says the absence of head chef Art Smith (who was once Oprah Winfrey's personal chef) is "palpable".

David Cameron braves David Letterman's US chat show – and leaves red-faced

David Cameron has become the first serving British prime minister to appear on popular US chat show the Late Show with David Letterman.
Mr Cameron faced questions on British history and culture during the show, which aired on Wednesday in the US.
The PM got many questions right but was unable to say what Magna Carta meant in English or who wrote the words and music of Rule Britannia.
Earlier at the UN, he appealed to world leaders for more action on Syria.
In the keynote speech to the General Assembly, he cited a recent report documenting torture and murder of children by regime forces and said more should be done to stop the "atrocities" of president Bashar Assad's government.
He also urged leaders to back the emerging democracies of the Arab Spring.
Mr Cameron had planned to use his subsequent appearance on the Letterman show - one of the most watched in the US with some three million daily viewers - to "bang the drum" for British business and encourage Americans to visit the UK.
Mr Letterman, has been a prominent fixture on late night US television for 30 years and the show is known for its hard-hitting political interviews, with past guests including Barack Obama, London Mayor Boris Johnson and Tony Blair, who has appeared twice since leaving 10 Downing Street.
In Wednesday's show, Mr Cameron was welcomed by a band playing Rule Britannia, and dry ice being pumped into the studio to represent a London fog.
Asked briefly about the Arab Spring and his UN trip, the prime minister then faced questions about the composer of Rule Britannia, guessing incorrectly at Edward Elgar.
The right answer, he was informed by Mr Letterman, is Thomas Arne - setting words by James Thomson to music.
Mr Cameron was also unable to provide an English translation of Magna Carta, which means great charter.
Hesitating before naming Runnymede as the place it was signed, he correctly answered 1215 as the date the Magna Carta was drawn up and told Mr Letterman about its significance in the origins of democracy.
The show's host later questioned Mr Cameron about Britain's four nations.
Mr Letterman said: "What is the deal on Wales? Did they vote for you, the people of Wales?
"Some of them did," Mr Cameron replied.
The prime minister raised a laugh in the studio when he joked about the UK's relations with the US.
"There were some good bits and some less than good bits, and obviously we had a bit of a falling out. I like to think we've got over that now."
During the programme, Mr Cameron also drew cheers from the audience when he mentioned London's hosting of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
But he avoided commenting on US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who had questioned London's preparations for the Games.
"The idea that two major world class athletics events took place in London... who would have bet against that going off flawlessly, as it seems to have done?" Mr Letterman asked.
Mr Cameron prompted the loudest applause of the evening when he explained that Britain does not allow political advertising, a big issue in the US where multi-billion dollar attack ads are being used in the presidential campaign.
However, he added that he was first recognised in the US because of television, when a passer-by spotted him on a New York street and shouted: "Hey, Prime Minister's Questions - we love your show."
Mr Cameron later said he wanted his appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman to help "bang the drum" for British business in the US.
He spoke about the creation of one million private sector jobs by his government over the past two years.
But he also admitted he is "not very popular at the moment", pointing to austerity measures and cuts as a possible explanation for his low ratings.
In a keynote speech to the United Nations General Assembly earlier, he urged world leaders to take more action to stop the "atrocities" of President Bashar al-Assad's government in Syria.
A recent report documenting the torture and murder of children by regime forces was a "stain on those who have failed to stand up" to Syria, he added.

Former Bank PHB boss used embezzled N45m to pay church tithes – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has accused a former managing director of Bank PHB, Mr Francis Atuche, of using depositors’ funds to pay N45 million in church tithes.
Lead prosecution counsel, Kemi Pinheiro, today made the accusation at the Lagos High Court, sitting in Ikeja, while leading in evidence a key witness, Mr Solomon Abolaji Ogunsola, a former staff of PHB Mortgages Limited. Atuche paid the money from an account of PHB Mortgage Limited.
Pinheiro presented documents in court, some of them e-mails sent as an order to release the sum of N35million to St. Monica Catholic church, Ibusa, Delta State, and another sum of N10million to another St. Augustine Catholic Church. Ogunsola told the court that Atuche sent the money to the two churches in Delta State because he hails from the state.
Ogunsola also admitted knowing two companies: Claremount Nigeria Limited and Claremount Asset Management. He said that Claremount Nigeria Limited had a call account with his bank and the account was owned by Atuche.
He explained that the only document on the call account’s file was a reference letter which bears Atuche’s name. The document was admitted as exhibit.
In addition, various transactions carried out by Atuche in his statements of account with Claremount Nigeria Limited and Claremount Asset Management Limited were read. Atuche had denied having anything to do with the two companies.
Justice Lateefa Okunnu admitted the accounts as exhibits.
The EFCC counsel also led in evidence, one Mr Andy Uzomor, another staff of PHB Mortgage Limited, who presented a 39-page document before the court as exhibit. The presentation of the document was opposed by lead defence counsel, Anthony Idigbe, who claimed that some of the documents had to do with a N20million transaction between his law chambers and Atuche. Idigbe urged the court not to admit the particular section as it will deny Atuche a right to a counsel of his choice. According to him, if the document was admitted either himself or his client will have to go into the witness box, which might force his chamber out of the case.
But Pinheiro insisted that Idigbe’s objections lacked substance in law. According to him, some of the documents pertained to an account that Atuche had disowned. Besides, he referred to Section 38, sub-section 1 of the EFCC Establishment Act which grants the EFCC power to seek and receive information from anybody. After listening to all their submissions, Justice Okunnu admitted the documents as exhibits and adjourned the case till October 4th, 2012.

Mugabe Again. Slams UN For Gaddafi's Death

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe said on Wednesday the death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was as tragic as that of US Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens, as he delivered a scathing critique of US, UN and Nato actions.
Speaking firmly, if occasionally stumbling over words, the 88-year-old president accused the United States of "rushing to suck oil from Iraq" when it invaded the country in 2003 on the erroneous grounds that it possessed weapons of mass destruction.
He said the UN Security Council had allowed itself to be "abused" last year by authorising "all necessary measures" - diplomatic code for military intervention - to protect civilians in Libya in a Nato operation that eventually toppled Gaddafi's government and led to his death at the hands of rebels.
Speaking with deliberate irony, Mugabe opened an address to the UN General Assembly by praising as "most glowing and most moving" a speech by US President Barack Obama on Tuesday in which he rued Stevens' death.
Stevens and three other Americans were killed during what Washington has called a "terrorist" attack on the US mission in Benghazi on 11 September. The assault forced the evacuation of US personnel from the eastern city that was the hub for the Libyan rebel movement.
"I am sure we were all moved, we all agree, that it was a tragic death indeed and we condemn it," said Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe since independence from Britain in 1980 and is among Africa's longest-serving leaders.
"As we in spirit join the United States in condemning that death, shall the United States also join us in condemning that barbaric death of the head of state of Libya - Gaddafi? It was a loss, a great loss, to Africa, a tragic loss to Africa."
The Zimbabwean accused the United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the 28-member Western security alliance whose air strikes helped Libyan rebels defeat Gaddafi's forces, of acting under false pretences.
"The mission was strictly to protect civilians, but it turned out that there was a hunt, a brutal hunt, of Gaddafi and his family," Mugabe said. "In a very dishonest manner we saw ... Chapter 7 being used now as a weapon to rout a whole family."
Chapter 7 of the United Nations Charter allows the UN Security Council to authorise actions ranging from diplomatic and economic sanctions to military intervention.
"Bombs were ... thrown about in a callous manner and quite a good many civilians died. Was that the protection that they had sought under Chapter 7 of the Charter?
"So the death of Gaddafi must be seen in the same tragic manner as the death of Chris Stevens. We condemn both of them." Mugabe, a long-standing critic of the West, is himself widely criticised for turning what was once one of Africa's strongest economies into a basket case and has been accused of hanging on to power through vote-rigging.
Other speakers at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday - notably Bolivia's leftist president, Evo Morales, and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - also criticised the United States for what they see as economic and political bullying.
A US official had no immediate comment on Mugabe's remarks.
The Zimbabwean leader appeared to be in reasonable health despite questions about his wellbeing sparked by Zimbabwean media reports that he has travelled to Singapore eight times in the past year to seek medical attention.
He walked in an almost jaunty manner to and from the lectern in the General Assembly hall, where he read his speech from a written text.

Nigeria's FG gives S’Arabia 24-hour ultimatum

Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo yesterday requested the Saudi authority to expedite action and resolve the issues surrounding the detention of female pilgrims adjudged to be on their own without male companion (Muharram) within 24 hrs.
He made this call when he invited the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Nigeria, Khaled O.Y. Abdrabuh, to his office specifically to register Nigeria’s displeasure with the treatment meted out to her pilgrims.
About 171 intending Nigerian female pilgrims were yesterday deported from Saudi Arabia after they were held for two days at the Medina Airport.
Sambo noted that reports available to him suggests that only Nigeria pilgrims were subjected to such dehumanizing treatment and requested the Saudi authorities to apply caution and flexibility to allow “our pilgrims undertake their sacred religious duties.”
A statement by his spokesman Umar Sani said Sambo further stated that “should the Saudi authorities not desire our pilgrims to perform this year’s hajj they should let the country know.”
He noted that no reasonable and responsible government would sit and fold its arms while its citizens were manhandled and requested the ambassador to do all within his powers to ensure that the issues were resolved within 24 hours and that the outcome of such resolution should be communicated to him.
While explaining the position of the Saudi Arabian government, Abdrahuh said that Nigeria was not treated in isolation but that it affected all countries around the world.
He said that it was not a new policy but that the Saudi government decided to be flexible in previous years but was strict this time around. He said that a meeting was ongoing in Ryadh between the Ministries of Hajj, Foreign Affairs, Interior and the Governor of Mecca with a view to resolving the impasse.

Overfed Sausage Dog Is World’s Fattest

This adorable pooch is now the world’s fattest Dachshund – after his owners almost fed him to DEATH.
Overweight Obie ballooned to a staggering 5.5 stone – TWICE the average size of the breed.
He has now been put onto a special diet by animal lover Nora Vanetta who took the canine in after his elderly owners gave him up due to their own worsening health.
Nora, from Portland in Oregon, USA, said: “He is extremely sweet and loving. He was obviously loved and is a joy to work with.
“The ageing owners just couldn’t say no to those big brown eyes.”
Nora, who has a degree in animal science and is a certified veterinary technician, now has the difficult task of getting Obie into shape.
But because of his staggering weight, she is unable to take him out for exercise and has resorted to a special diet and hydrotherapy in an attempt to shed the pounds.
Nora wants her two other dogs - a nine-year-old Labrador and five-year-old Dachshund - to be good role models for Obie.
She has also set up a Paypal page to encourage people to donate money to pay for his continued care.
Obie even has his own Facebook page, “Biggest Loser, Doxie Edition” with more than 9,000 “likes”.
Nora – who hopes Obie will lose around three stone — said: “My hope is that he can be an inspiration to any person or animal trying to lose weight.”

Counting calories: As Obie is too big to exercise, he has been put on a special diet and hydrotherapy regime

Disgraced Strauss-Kahn seeks dismissal of pimping charges

Lawyers for Dominique Strauss-Kahn on Wednesday asked a French appeal court to dismiss charges that the disgraced former IMF chief helped procure prostitutes for sex parties.
The court in the northern town of Douai deferred a ruling until November 28 after a closed-door hearing, lawyers said.
Strauss-Kahn admits attending orgies in France and the United States but claims he did not know the women involved were being paid to take part.
He was not present at Wednesday's hearing.
The case, known as the "Carlton affair" in France, centers around allegations that business leaders and police officials in Lille operated a vice ring supplying girls for sex parties, some of which are said to have taken place at the Carlton Hotel in the northern city.
Lawyers for Jean-Christophe Lagarde, a police commissioner who faces the same charges as Strauss-Kahn, have also asked for the case against their client to be dismissed.
Rene Kojfer, the former public relations officer at the hotel who has been accused of pimping in the affair, said Wednesday that if Strauss-Kahn's name was not involved there "would be no case."
"I never took money. I am not a pimp," Kojfer told Le Parisien newspaper. "What has happened to me and my superiors in the Carlton is unjust. What a great hullabaloo and so little to show for it in the end.
"In my opinion, if there was no DSK, there would be no case," he said using the acronym widely used in France for Strauss-Kahn, who was about to enter the French presidential race when he was arrested in May 2011 in New York after a hotel worker alleged he had carried out a brutal sexual assault on her.
The criminal case collapsed because of doubts about the alleged victim's testimony but Strauss-Kahn was unable to salvage his presidential ambitions as details of another alleged attack and the Carlton case surfaced on his return to France.
Kojfer said his lawyer would be challenging "the manner in which this case was handled".
Strauss-Kahn's wife of some two decades, Anne Sinclair, loyally stood by him when the New York scandal erupted but the couple have since split.
A former television journalist and the heiress to a large fortune, Sinclair now runs the French edition of the Huffington Post.
